Rapid Indexer
« on: January 04, 2023, 08:07:40 pm »
I could use one of these once in a while but, A) it’s over budget for the amount of use it would get. B) it’s a bit high to use in the horizontal position on my mill. C) I already have several chucks I could use with a shop made version.
Have any of you made anything similar? Having 1° divisions as in the picture would be handy and I could use a Spin Indexer to do this.

Having a small indexer that can be mounted vertically or horizontally in the mill vise is something good to have.  Lots of little index jobs that are easy to do without taking the vise off the table.   It's very convenient.
A spindex can be kinda tall in the vertical on most machines    a Hardinge HS4V only gives 24 positions  but it's a battle ship and very stiff.  It would seem that item above is pretty desirable.

Making a small rotary table fixture is pretty easy   getting accurate lndexing is hard.

A Spin Indexer has been useful on my mill but sadly there’s no way I can use it vertically. I can get a small rotary table cheaper than the pictured device but I don’t need or want the complexity of a RT.

Assuming one can do simple arithmetic, an RT has the advantage of accommodating any number of divisions.  OTH, I've never had occasion to index anything that a 24 division indexer couldn't handle.

You might get some ideas for a DIY indexer from the 24 division collet/faceplate model I built, described here...

Even if you make a 24 hole indexer, you may encounter (very infrequently) a number of divisions it can't handle.  An RT is then the answer. If you're dumbfounded by arithmetic, look into the ROTARY program on my page.  Given the desired number of divisions it will produce a table in a separate file that you can print and carry to the work shop.  An example output is shown below...

Number of divisions = 7

DIVISION degdec     deg     min     sec
       0      0.0000       0          0        0
       1     51.4286      51       25      43
       2    102.8571     102     51      26
       3    154.2857     154     17       9
       4    205.7143     205     42      51
       5    257.1429     257       8      34
       6    308.5714     308     34      17
       7    360.0000       0        0        0

That’s a good idea Marv. I can easily index the edge of something with 24 holes on my Spin Indexer. I’ll give it some thought.  ;)

A set of orphaned dividing head plates might make that easier.  I know a fellow who has a set for sale for a very reasonable price.
Anyone interested message me privately and I'll put you in touch.
