Pallet Jack needs wheels
« on: March 25, 2025, 04:21:22 PM »
I pulled out the pallet jack for the first time in a long while to move some equipment in my shop.  I was surprised to see the plastic tires on the front wheels peel off on both sides.  Who knew?

Luckily it seems replacements can be found on Amazon.

What sort of little engine will you add to the wheels to make it self propelled?   :stickpoke:

It is self-propelled.  By my self.   8)

Love it when YouTube shows how to do the swap.

Nothing is ever easy.  The wheels are fixed with a roll pin that refuses to budge.  Thought about drilling it out, but with a handheld drill it's hard to keep it straight through.  I decided in the interim to just scrape off the remainder of the plastic "tires", and that allows the jack to work normally.  I think the solution may be to make a press out of a screw clamp.  I've owned the jack for 16+ years, and I bought it used.  So plenty of time for things to get pretty stuck.

Yeah I had to change the wheels on the pallet jack at work, didn't have any trouble though.

I've not tried drilling a roll pin - I always imagined that the springy material might be semi-hard - and the shape will grab the drill.  The protruding bit can already be spread out a little,  making it hard to press through, so grinding it off before pressing in a drift has worked for me.

while I'm thinking of it, Have you tried a roll pin punch? The 1/4 inch one I use at work is McMaster's Part Number 3421A41. Keeps the punch centered while you wail on it!

That's the first thing I tried, but the wheel mount moves so it's hard to get any force onto the pin.

I have run into "stuck" pins that were mushroomed on the end from someone previously trying to get them out with inappropriate tools.

Regarding, the mount moving: Is it possible to remove the caster so you can clamp it in a vise?

The axle assembly is fastened with another type of pin where I can't put any pressure on it.  I might be able to clamp it, so that's the next idea to try.  I am able to move some things with the old wheels now that the plastic tires are removed, but the lathe (3500 lbs) doesn't want to budge more than a few inches.

Can you put bits of wood or metal between the orage bit and the black bit to keep that assembly from moving whilst you wail on that roll pin?
I was cut out to be rich ... but ... I was sewn up all wrong!

I can't tell from the photo and description, so perhaps this is not relevant.

I remembered that I once removed a stubborn roll pin by tapping it with threads and using a threaded adapter on a small slide hammer to pull it out from the side it was hammered in from.
