New member from SE Pennsylvania USA

Greetings All!

I just recently resumed a quest that started way, way back when I was about 12 years old.  I noted a Shay locomotive on the back cover of a modeling magazine and was instantly fascinated by it to the core.  In years since I have built one in HO scale, adding detail to the rather barren kit.  This was followed by actually seeing the real thing running in West Virginia.  But this was the year I started making a cardboard & wood example of the scale I wish to build a working model in... to get the feel.  I reason that if I'm going down this rabbit-hole, it might as well be big enough to ride on somewhat comfortably!  Aiming for a three-truck Shay.

As you can see from my screen name, I have another fascination in my spare time, the Jeep.  That is another career that surfaces now and then.  It was this aspect of life that I used as an excuse to build up a home shop.  This will also work for constructing a live steam engine.

Let the journey begin!

Dean

Welcome to the group!   Shays make great models, getting down to see the ones at Cass WV is a great motivator!

Welcome aboard.  I think you'll enjoy your time here; lots of helpful folks.

Where in SE PA? (I grew up in Allentown.)
Regards, Marv

Hello Dean, and Welcome! Enjoyed the CJ-5 we had years ago, but when the second and third kids arrived the Jeep had to go.

Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone.  Looking forward to exploring here!

@crueby: Was at a Cabin Fever show way back there sometime.  Thanks for the reminder!

@mklotz: about 55 miles south-ish of Allentown.  Nice convenient spot for a lot of things.

Welcome to the forum.
Sounds like you are not far from
https://roughandtumble.org
Not open often but they have there own Shay. You can take ride around the grounds for a couple of bucks.  also a place to exhibit models. An lots of other cool things to see.
If you re serious and have not done so  then pick up a copy of Building the Shay by Kozo Hiraoka Published by village press.  200 pgs. 22 chapters plus extensive appendix of how to.

Sounds like the West Chester area. I'm about a further nine miles south.

@Dave & Doug: Not near West Chester at all, a chunk east of there.

@Tin: I actually have Kozo's book... somewhere! Bought it way, way, back.  Gotta find it.  The stainless Shay was impressive.

@Red: Greetings back across the pond!

And of course, Happy New Year to All!!
