Metropolitan Railway E Class Loco

This is a Gauge3 model of an engine that pulled trains on suburban services to north London, in the first half of the 20thC. There is one example in preservation

The model is built using a CNC mill to cut the parts including the wheels which are aluminium, some detail parts are 3D printed.

The engine is powered by a 24V DC motor with integral gearbox via bevel gears to the middle axle, and has R/C.

Beautiful loco and sheet metal work! Do you have any tricks to getting the paint to adhere the brass, also what type of paint are you using? It looks very nice!

A very nice locomotive.
In the second picture, where the engine can still be seen without paint, I can clearly see how cleanly the soldering of the brass parts was carried out. It's definitely not that easy. Did you also design the interior of the cabin, the back wall of the boiler, with details?

I use resistance soldering to join the metal parts, give very good control of the heat.

The cab has full details, I get the individual parts 3D printed, paint them with brass paint then assemble. This example from another engine.

I abrade the brass while still flat to key the primer paint. I have used enamel paint for most of my models, but this one I use an acrylic spay can of car paint.

The Metropolitan Railway had a set of four wheel coaches that where built from teak wood, instead of painting them they just varnished them, and where known as teak stock. I think they are rather attractive and thought they would work well with the engine.

The Metro coach is complete, painting the teak effect was interesting after doing some test panels with different combinations of colours and thickness of paint I found the right combination. I am pleased with the result.

Ah - great paint job also.

The 'Rough assembled Wood' looks good as is - but of cause nobody is fooled into thinking wood with that color or uniform surface (no grains)
