Shop Freeware site is no more
« on: July 22, 2024, 06:50:31 PM »
Observant members will notice that my signature no longer includes a reference to my freeware page of useful shop programs.

For several weeks the site has been unreachable.  An email to Scott Ripley, who managed the details of getting the site onto the interweb, went unanswered.

Hoping I was wrong I began checking obituaries and found, to my sorrow, that Scott had died on his 50th birthday earlier this year.

I have no plans for resurrecting the site.  Most people are only interested in avoiding anything mathematical at any cost.

Of course, I still have copies of everything that was on the site.  If you need a particular program, contact me via email and I'll send you what you need.
Regards, Marv

Some of Us never had the chance. I got sick the first couple of weeks of math and the school did not have any make up classes. I took business classes instead. I cannot seem to make heads or tails of it now. I have a small machine shop and always have found a way around it. I have down loaded a copy of Your programs and thank You for them.

Would it still come up on something like archive.org? if so you could link to their page for it.

Edit, yep it is still all there and downloadable

Web archive works using Microsoft Edge but not Firefox 128.0.

Thanks very much for that, Jason.  I guessed it was archived somewhere but never thought it would be possible to download from the archived copy.  I just now downloaded one of the programs using Firefox 115.13.0 (64 bit) and got it to work using DosBox.

I grabbed the whole kit and caboodle from archive.org without issues. I was going to post a zip archive of the contents here, but 6.3M is too big.

Tried a few of the programs in Dosbox on a 64 bit Linux computer and they worked fine. It's been awhile, but I forgot how superior the Bash command-line is compared to DOS. :)

Thanks, Krypto, much appreciated.  That will be a nice thing to pass along to future members after Ripley's sites evaporate (I doubt his heirs will support them).

6.3 meg is not that much these days.  Three pictures on my camera occupy that much space.

Hi Marv,

Sorry to hear about your hoster's demise. As someone who is also on his 51st orbit, I'm aware of having more creaks and twinges than 10 years ago.... but fingers crossed nothing big or scary.

I'm sure we can find a home somewhere on this site for your programs, if you like?

Cheers,
Ade.

Thanks for the generous offer, Ade.

I've lost interest in the programs.  The site has been up for many years and has received very little attention so I'm not motivated to keep it alive.  It seems that most people are only looking for ways to avoid doing anything mathematical.  Most puzzling to me is the fact that, when a math issue arises, there's always a crowd of innumerates eager to trumpet their lack of ability and inability to learn.

Anyone who could genuinely use one of the programs can always contact me or use one of the facilities that Jason and Krypto have documented.

As far as housing the programs on MEM, I leave that to your discretion.  You have my full permission to do whatever you wish (including nothing) with them.
Regards, Marv
