Managed to finish the second rod today and one cross head

Quite good parts with a fair bit going on !

I’ve made up a solution of Nickel and I’ll plate the rods and another engines crank !

On to Nickel plating today so a bit more chilled 😎

One thing I did notice and thought about was oil ways for the big end , I don’t know what the intended oiling method is needed as per drawing as there are no holes for the oil to get fully into the bearings… I’m thinking just splashing a bit around the big end and crank isn’t really going to oil the contact surfaces!? Or maybe I’m overthinking and the oil will get in there ! Not sure Tbh

Some of mine I put in oil holes, some I just put drops down in next to the crank pin and the web. For occasional demo running thats plenty.

Be aware that nickle plating will tarnish, but at least not rust. When car parts are chromed, the color is actually a nickle plating, then its topped with a chrome layer that is basically transparent, but is shinier and prevents the tarnishing.

Here’s a little more complete!

Two pistons and one rod, pretty standard stuff but took care to get a close fit and a good ring groove !

I went with Vitron o rings mainly due to having good wear properties and heat resistance is good too , I’ll make the second rod and lower cylinder cover glands - after that lot I’ve pretty much got an engine

One problem I have caught is I had made the lower features of the cross head upside down after I had drilled the fixing hole (M3)

So to re- establish that hole on the other side concentric I have ordered the correct ER20 collet , If that fails I’ll make a new one , hopefully won’t need to tho and learning rescue methods is a good thing

Starting to feel like an engine now I have finished the cross heads and pins and installed the rods and trunks to test!

I made the flywheel and tidied the piston valve housings

Also made and fitted the cylinder trunk gaskets and final fit for those too, A little blue locktite on the screws and span everything over and alls good !

The flywheel is a friction fit and a slip fit if i slightly warm it which is perfect, I’ll use a set screw but that won’t misalign anything as it’s such a close fit ……

Weight wise 1600grams at the mo

I’ve really enjoyed my first engine !!

I think I’m going to start a cast iron version of the Borderer, I like the design and the looks and with care they can look very tidy indeed!

So the plan will be all parts made not cast , Block , valve chests covers, trunks, cylinder covers, base all cast iron , Then mild steel for rods, crank, eccentric

I guess bronze pistons and stainless rods

Bronze cross heads and bearings

Should look a bit more scale in cast iron and wood cladding
Oh and slide valve for this one as it won’t be fitted to a boat just on display

Here’s a bit more done on this project

I’ve made the eccentric components fully, bored the piston valve housings, made the piston valve fork ends ….

Not too much to go now !

After having problems with the marcher piston valves I have made absolutely sure I’m within 2 microns tolerance between the valve and housing… not easy but well worth it , For a test if you put sharpie on the valve stock it almost jams up trying to slide from the un-sharpied section ….. Seriously happy with that and the engine should make good power

Well here we are

First run just using a quick and dirty fitting into one cylinder only ….

It has very strong beats indeed for a piston valve engine!

I’ll set up the other cylinder timing in the same way then make all the pipe work


Jobs to finish are cladding, pipes , reverse valve ….. hopefully by the end of the weekend I may be finished
