Hi chaps,

This one should be interesting 🤨

A little bit bigger than my previous projects , all castings seem to be present and correct.

Building the piston valve version for super heated steam and rc use , also got a great new idea on how to fit the water pump in a space efficient way !

The castings are very good indeed ! I think the only two jobs I can’t manage on my set up is the cylinder bores and crank shaft

Just due to equipment size and I’d choose a stainless crankshaft , other than that all other operations I can manage …..

I found your engine in a somewhat older catalog and there are references to several editions from the model engineer. Maybe you can get help there.

The crankshaft could be built up from pieces if you can't manage a solid one.

Mounting the cylinder on it's side to a lathe cross slide and using a between centres boring bar would work if you can't set it up on a faceplate.

I think the crank is such a critical item I’d like to have a fellow model maker help out !

It comes down the lathe size I guess , I have a proxxon pf230 and a warco mini lathe but I’d bet the larger of the two lathes still would struggle….

Is it against terms to pay people for help on the site ??

Members provide their help for free  its all for the love of building model engines and seeing others successfully building theirs.

The only people who actually pay are the admins our Moderators generously provide their time for free

There are certainly members here who will do CAD work, make parts or even whole engines for a reward as well as doing it for free.

It would be worth having a go at making the crankshaft yourself and see how you get on though I would suggest a free cutting mild steel is  a better choice than Stainless not least because it is easier to machine.

The coolest way to make this crankshaft is by assembly by silver brazing of dead rectangular bits and round axles of metal, you just have to drill matching rectangle together to keep them identical and cut the shaft after brazing between crank web at the end...

but making one from a solid bar is also quite possible on both of your lathe, without struggle...

I think I’m going to have a go at the crank , I really should!

I’ve had issues parting off recently which put me off trying slot cuts on decent diameters especially steel..
Now today I spend a few hours tightening and adjusting every bit of play out of the mini lathe and it’s cutting pretty good now with a very expensive 2mm carbide parting tool !

That’s what I will have to use to clear most of the material then maybe a clean up pass with a form tool ..

Also I’ll turn between centres , and get a local engineer to index both ends symmetrical for me so I vc a just set up a drive dog (somehow) and I’m good to make scrap ! No wait a crank shaft !

It’s odd now two engineers have said ‘ummmm’   When asked to turn between centres !

Alarm bells so I’ll do it all be it extremely light cuts ….

I’ll index the ends of the blank whilst bolted to a v block so I can flip end to end a reference the centre spots needed , I think if that goes well I may be ok !
