Title: Chris's Marion Valve Winding Engine Complete
Post by: crueby on December 30, 2019, 09:04:55 PM
Hi all,
The Marion-valved winding engine is complete, very happy with how it came out!  And thanks to all that helped along the way with tips/ideas/etc, much appreciated!

This engine is of a mill-type twin cylinder, but it uses the same valving setup that the Marion Steam Shovel Company invented for their slew/crowd engines. It has a central valve that controls both the speed of the engine and the direction, so one lever allows for control of forward/reverse/throttle without the use of any external linkages for the reversing - it uses a special two-level slide valve and four ports in the valve face on each cylinder, and swaps the steam/exhaust between two pipes in the central control valve. There is a section in the build thread that shows more detail on this.
Here are some pictures of the completed engine:

and a video of it running - self starts well in both directions and the throttle lever controls the speed nicely:

Hello Chris,

Beautiful in every respect.

You need to put a muffler on that air compressor :lolb:

Have a great day,
Thomas

Thanks Zee! And yes, work on the Stanley is about to start. Getting the plans ready, and drawing up some of the holding fixtures for the main block.  So please have your attack elves stop looking in the windows and saying Weeellll?   :Jester:

:pinkelephant: However... ;D...being an engineer yourself, you would understand my need desire requirement for some deadlines.  ;D

:embarassed: I say this with, not insignificant, trepidation that I'll be asked the same question at some point too soon.

Two deadlines I can give:

Build will start this week.

Build will be done this century.

One of the airplane builders here in the Airpark, when asked "when are you going to get your airpane finished" always replies: "On Tuesday" He just never says which Tuesday!  :lolb:

Jim

PS: Your engine came out great Chris. This has been an enjoyable build to follow.

I did not get around to watching the video until today. Too bad I waited. That is a very nice running and very controllable engine with an incredible sound.

I admire all your posted projects and I will continue to look for new things you do.

Thank You for posting and I wish you the best for 2020.
