Blue has now dried and the mustard resist has been scrubbed off along with the paint which was on top of it using some Scotchbrite - interesting effect!

Now an overnight dry before the next stage ..........

Interesting pictures of the couple of actual hammers .  If I chucked my model out in the garden and forgot about it for a few years, I might get just about the effect of the first one before I'm too far gone myself to be bothered!
Adventurous stuff going on in your paint shop at home, will be interested in seeing the outcome.  The military and railway modellers have a lot of subtle techniques for refining and shading the areas of weathering, usually airbrush based, but using dry powder pigment also ( artist's pastel chalk crayons are a good source )  and washes sprayed with a varnish fixative.  Might be worth exploring a few of those ideas?  Dave

Thanks

It's not finished yet, the ageing and rusting stages are next; just waiting for the appropriate colours to arrive and yes they will be washed on/off

I've not got an airbrush and never used one before and not sure how much use I'd get out of it moving forward ........?

That steam hammer definitely needs to go to a restorer! 😉

No, it really looks well done. It’s something completely different. 👍

Looks like you've  perfected putting time in a bottle (and applying it to the model).

I'm admiring your bravery with the paint job experimenting!  will be very interested to see how the coatings build up.  Just at the moment, it would make an excellent tool to have been despatched to British Forces overseas, for making big repairs to heavy equipment while being camoflaged and disguised for use in the Burmese jungle.  Not so easy to mask the sound of it bashing away, though!

Have a look at nightshift on youtube, he does some fantastic tutorials on weathering. When Ive done plastic modelling I tend to weather with oil paints which you can "streak", basically a small dot of paint in areas and then using a slightly damp brush with white spirit you can streak and blend
Nothing travels faster than the speed of light with the possible exception of bad news, which obeys its own special laws.

I felt the rusting effect was excessive, have reapplied mustard onto parts which were blackish and sprayed more blue; let’s see what happens. If it’s a complete disaster then I’ll strip it all off and start again

That final stage worked a treat

If you look at the photo from yesterday it looked like the rust was put on afterwards and is on surface, way, way too much and brushed on. Today's look is more authentic with the rust in patches and coming from underneath

I'm sure there are many varied opinions about the finish, both positive and negative  ;) , but it's very near to the effect I was hoping to achieve, so I'm done .........final coat of laquer tomorrow

BTW: goodness knows how many paint layers are on this!

EDIT: Brushed/dabbed on a very watered down Sepia wash over some areas to finish

The Stuart Hammer is now complete, operational and resplendent in it's old, rusted look; maybe it should be called the 'The ready for the scrapyard look' ..........

For anyone wanting to do the same (not many takers methinks), Jason's instructions earlier in the build log outline the process, I think for the more knackered look, the final application of mustard and another top coat, followed by scrapping it off produced the result for me ........but each to their own.

Here is a video of it running, the operator is my 84 year old mum who is a licensed model steam hammer operator, yes that's me shouting 'go' at the start ;)

Well Done Sanjay!!! I really like the look and that model would really look the part in an industrial type diorama. My only thought is that the box on the side could be reversed so the copper pipe could go 'round the back side of the machine out of harms way. Just my thought.

You have a skilled operator there ... I hope you pay her well!

That turned out nicely. Now you can put it on the shelf for a couple of years before you restore it to pristine condition!!

Looks great! It was nice to follow this build along. I agree that the second round of paint looks much better as well
