30th Model Engine Collectors Association Meet near Bern

This year I decided to display some of my engines.  We were allowed to run them outside as long as they were not too loud or smokey.

There was, like last year, a selection of multi cylinder engines using a lot of CNC and 3D printing.

René Schweri bought his speed boat as well as runable V8 and V10 engines.

Daniel Hunziker ran his electronic fuel injected VR5.

There were various sizes (classes?) of tether cars, the smallest being around 6cm long.

Some old radio control gear and commercial engines were displayed in glass fronted cases which made photography a little difficult.

Outside the was a fine slow running gas engine.

Wow!!! Some impressive multi-cylinder engines on display. Wish I could have been there, so thank you for taking the time to post the photos. Do you have a close up of Daniel Hunziker electronic fuel injected VR5.

Hello Roger,

Thanks for posting the additional photos of Daniel Hunziker's EFI engines.

Model size fuel injection have always interested me, even though none of my engines will ever need such a system. I try to keep an eye on your mechanical fuel injection work, (especially the Lucas system). I also try to keep an eye on Hunziker's EFI developments. It seems he is happy with his fixed EFI pulse width and RPM dependent (variable) fuel rail pressure system. I had half expected, but still see no indication of an electric sensor (potentiometer) for throttle position (TPS). Obviously he has decided he does not need one.  :thinking:

PS. We don't actually know what Daniel Hunziker's is doing inside his Arduino controller. So it's only a guess on my part as to which control strategy he is using.

Roger, thanks for pictures & description. That event sure would be a nice one to attend.
Do you happen to know if Daniel's setup was same as his YouTube video or developments down that path? His pump looks quite similar in design to what we have been discussing but I believe he mentioned 0.5-1.0 bar delivery pressure so its a different fuel delivery animal to what you are working on

I asked Daniel about the current control strategy on his VR5:

The fuel supply is currently unregulated. The gear pump speed and the regulating (needle) valve at the end of the fuel manifold are set by hand to give a pressure of around 0.8 bar and a flow rate around 10 times that which is required for injection. He plans to add a pressure sensor and active control in the future.

The injectors are triggered from a magnet and hall sensor on the flywheel and the Arduino calculates the delay required for each injector to deliver on that cylinder’s inlet stroke. The system is designed for up to 12 cylinders, including a V12.

The injection period is currently fixed at 6.0 mS however he has written the algorithm for ‘Fuel Mapping’ with a variable injection period.

That's some interesting feedback about the relative 'simplicity' of  Daniel Hunziker's Arduino EFI system.

Constant fuel rail pressure 0.8Bar. (manually control via needle valve)
Constant injection pulse width 6.0ms, RPM dependant via flywheel trigger.
Variable injection period fuel mapping still being thought about.

It may be a relatively simple (controlled by RPM only) EFI but it clearly does enough for bench running with no load applied.
