Virtually all websites use https today, with the "s" meaning secure.
Every back and forth communication is encrypted so that an onlooker cannot easily steal passwords and other important information. The "certificate" includes a lengthy encryption code to facilitate this task.
Certificates have a definite start date, end date, website ID, etc. They are essentially impossible to crack.
If a certificate has expired it will no longer work. Certificates typically last for a couple of months and must be renewed.
I manage another website (completely unrelated to anything discussed here) and I need to renew the certificate on a regular basis.
