During last summer's virtual model show, I provided a virtual table display to exhibit the two I/C engine powered tanks which I built some years ago. It was suggested at the time that members might welcome more content describing how they were designed and how they were built. Things are rather quite on the forum at the moment, so now may be a good time to start.
I have built two I/C engine powered tanks. The first, is 1/6 scale working model of a turret-less reconnaissance tank based on the American M5 Stuart light tank, which was also known as the 'Honey'. It got that name because it was a joy to drive, a little 'Honey', due to it's light weight and powerful aircraft radial engine.

The second is also a turret-less tank, or more exactly, a self propelled gun. it is an all metal, 1/6 scale working model of the German Sturmgeschütz III , more commonly called the StuG 111. The StuG 111 started out as a mobile assault gun to support the front line infantry troops. It was later up-gunned with a long barreled 75mm high velocity cannon and became a formidable anti-tank weapon.

Both model tanks were fitted with a variety of I/C engines during there development. Both tanks also featured transmission and steering systems developed from the designs of Iliya Cerjak, a brilliant young Dutch designer. I propose to present how each tank, it's engines and transmission systems were created and then developed.
I will start this series of posts with the M5 Stuart recon tank and later (if there is enough interest) I will do the same for the StuG111

I am another who will be watching along. They are amazing models requiring a huge range of skills.
No hope of emulating your efforts in my shop, but it’s inspiring even for a beginner to see just what can be done by a real master.
Thanks for the effort it takes to write up those posts.

Small 1/16 scale and the larger 1/6 scale radio controlled model tanks and armored vehicles are becoming very popular. The British firm Armortek https://www.armortek.co.uk/ make a wide range of heavy metal kits, unfortunately there is often a long waiting list for their kits.
Almost all of these radio controlled model tanks are propelled by two electric motors and a large battery. What's the challenge in that? :thinking: I'm an engineer, I NEED engines and gearboxes and mechanisms that need to be created in the workshop, not with a chequebook.

I can see you are getting impatient for me to start the M5 Stuart thread.
As an appetizer, the M3 Stuart was powered by an 7-cylinder Continental W-670 air cooled aircraft radial engine (big clue there). To relieve wartime demand for the radial aero-engines later versions of the M5 used twin Cadillac V8 automobile engines.

It took me two years to assemble it as I upgraded many parts to make them look like the real thing. Enjoyed every minute. Learned many new skills in the process and that is the reason I will follow your thread.

Lots of times I would love to comment on someone's work and I just don't know what to say, so I end up doing nothing. I guess the thumbs up is better than nothing.
Not always easy for me to put my thought into words.

Honestly, those of us who are newer / less experienced at this hobby, with perhaps less intricate and interesting projects and engines, appreciate just knowing that there are people looking if from time to time. A simple thumbs up or something is a bit of a boost in some ways. Doesn't need to be on a constant basis obviously, but I feel that will help keep the interest up in all posting levels of the forum, so to speak.
