Vintage single cylinder oscillator
« on: August 01, 2026, 07:29:10 pm »
I got a bit distracted today with this old grubby single cylinder oscillator. I did a bit of rummaging and the closet thing I could find was out of the W.MacMillan & Co. catalogue but the picture is so small its impossible to definitively say if it is or it isn't!

It was extremely filthy so needed a complete tear down and scrubbing with all sorts of mixtures and potions before using a Dremel with a tiny wire brush

EDIT: the one out of the catalogue doesn't seem to have a rear bearing, so it's not the one

After the cleanup I put it back together and with a bit of oil and some air she runs sweetly for an engine of her vintage. I seem to have built/restored a few oscillators recently and she looks like a good companion to the recent twin cylinder oscillator I finished a few weeks back  :D

That's a nice chunky one and a good solid runner

I've seen lots with that arrangement of a screw pressing the cylinder onto the valve face but never tried one... might give it a whirl next time.

What a total transformation the concerted clean up has wrought!  In some cases , of course, patination and originality need to to pondered, but in the case of this elderly engine, the antiquity was mostly filth and grime of general neglect, I should think, and the de-gunging has restored attraction to it.  Dave
