A bit of a bind, but presumably you will give the two bolted together castings a skim of a fairly minimal kind, with the cylinder bore as your datum for the horizontal. At least, unlike a steam engine piston rod, the hammer doesn't need to line up with the anvil with very great precision, so it should work out OK.

Graham. It would be interesting to try the lost PLA on a more complex casting that might otherwise have needed a core. From what I have seen of other peoples attempts the gasses from the burning PLA can cause problems. Your simple gears would have been a lot easier to vent.

But for parts like the flywheel and base I don't see an advantage in lost PLA over traditional methods where the pattern is removed.

I'll go and search the ME archive to see if I can find what issue it was in. I've also been studying the Boys Own mag these last few days ;) ;) ;)

re the popcorn load vs lightning - I told the gnomes in the crew on the Jimmy that the tie rods on the steering were rated as lightning rods too.... :thinking:  :embarassed: ..... so far so good. Hopefully no  :zap: :zap:  >BOOM<  :popcorn: :popcorn: :popcorn: :popcorn:    :Lol:

Made the little block to go at the top of the displacer rod, there will be two flat rods either side going up to the crank pin with the piston rod sitting between.

Made a piston from some reclaimed cast iron but somehow managed to take too much off - it would probably be fine for a compressor powered engine but not good enough for a hot air jobbie. Also as it would be difficult to get the small cross hole properly centred afterwards, I made another one from some aluminium rectangular bar which I drilled first for the wrist pin then turn down very carefully. The fit is rather good.

Next I made the aluminium piston rod from some recycled garden furniture (I could probably make a thousand of those from the masses of square tube I salvaged). Drilled the holes at the right distance then filed it to shape using filing buttons for the larger end.

I don't know how you feel about what their reporting of other's work but my personal feeling is that the more people who can see and appreciate your incredible work, the better.  At least Jon, the owner of the site, is rigorous about crediting the author of work he publicizes.

In fact, Jon did the same with some of my work a long time ago and that's how I found the site, joined, and have contributed a lot more directly.
I think its nice, they give full reference and  link to the site here. Looks like they linked several of my builds. Thanks for the reference to that site, I'll  do a little browsing of what else they have.   :cheers:
