Ah got it...thanks both

and the hardening - shall I make it red hot (cherry) b4 dunking

I should have asked this at the start, is this a hand tool or am I putting this in the miil?

I'm also thinking loctiting the guide in place before starting the cutting process?

And just keep going until the valve is near flush and I get a constant blue line with the Engineers Blue?

If you don't do this the cutter will just rub and not cut.

I doctored your photo, you want to relive the part in yellow and the don't touch the blue part.

The 10-15 thou is how much of the 45deg chamfer should remain.

You want to remove material behind that as shown in green.

Its starting to look more like a cutter now....final few steps...and don't want to mess up

Still a little confused by the filing, from your photo and the drawing I hold the cutter at a 45 deg angle and cut away the red triangle shape I have drawn. It mentions 0.010" - 0.015: still not certain what that measurement is?

When hardening, just focus on the cutting, but how much heat for how long before submersion in water and is that straight in without cooling?

The gear cutting has started,

got the first four done:

For the last one, its large enough that the mill table would not extend out far enough, so I had to put the rotary table up and out on the tooling plate to get the cutter around behind the gear:

Will tackle that one after a break. Its an 80 tooth, about 4" diameter.

That looks nice, very neat .....here's hoping for a similar result.

I have now cut the chamfer and looking at the milling stage and wondering how far to cut in to make the 4 flutes. My diameter is 0.606" so the red line (depth) on the diagram will be 0.303", but the orange line which is the horizontal distance has to clear pilot section so maybe 0.200" from the centre line?

These were on Wayne Grennings FB page this morning, gives an idea of how a guided cutter will true up the seat. This is an old full size engine where the guide was worn so that was trued and reamed and then the cutter used to do the seat. First pic shows a light cut indicating how off the seat is.
