Which way does the molten metal flow?
« on: June 01, 2026, 01:05:05 am »
I made a video about how molten metal flows into a sand mold. It gave some surprising results but confirmed to me that using multiple in gates does not mean that molten metal will flow in all of the ingates. The second experiment using a knife gate showed that fluid flow can be a tricky thing.

Are you just pasting the link in, or using the 'youtube' button in the posting GUI? You can just paste the link in like text, no need to use the button.

I used the youtube button first and that gave the invalid message, I then used the hyperlink button same thing. Next time I will have to do like you said and paste the link in the text. By the way I tried the link without the useless parts in my post and it works. thank you for your help.

Best bet is to contact Ade using the 'contact' button on the home page, he ought to be able to fix the connection issue to the forum.

I fixed it for you, doing exactly what Chris suggested.  I removed the [ youtube] [ /youtube] tags.  And now it works.  There was actually TWO versioins of the link embedded in a row, and that migth have been causing issues too.

I think it's working now, though!

I click "share" just under the Youtube screen and then copy the link that comes up. Then just paste the link here, no need to click any forum icons. That way you can also select a start position if you want.

I suppose once the cross section of the gates equals the cross section of the runner the flow will be restricted by what can flow along the runner so you can't get out more than you are putting into the runner.

Your runner is probably 450mm2, the knife gate almost double that at around 900mm2. What size were the 4 individual gates you cut?

Edit, thinking some more the knife gate was actually filling the cavity with two areas 3 x 20 so only about 120mm2

In production they no doubt have the time to optimise the gate sizes to get the flow that they want but for our sort of one off or small batches it is down the the experience of the caster as to what will likely work.

Thanks for fixing that problem and I will have to try that fix in the future.

I think you are right and to add to what you posted I am sure that the end gates are not completely filled up because of metal momentum forcing the molten metal to one side of the gate.

Gates are about the size of my thumb and maybe too large for the runner to fill them up.
