I was wondering about that, I guess the position/depth should be where the edge of the insert is flush to the edge of the standard and therefore the flutes appear sunken in?

Oh thank goodness.........this is going to be a great help. I was struggling with how the engine components fitted together and operated as the original build log is sparse and the drawings supplied don't have an exploded type view

Strange ........the kit provides a casting for the large outer trunion but not the smaller inner one so this needed fabricating. I wasn't sure of the best method but I had a bit of hex bar with a hole in the centre so used that to hold it in the lathe to start, then over to the mill and reduced both sides to width. Then chopped it to height and milled the centre out, it does mean there's a hole in the bottom, but that'll be covered by the bearing brass or could use a bit of JB Weld.

Next I need to make the cap, again not sure how to make it, especially with the 1/4" radius which'll make it look nice..... maybe just a file?

EDITUse a bit of the remaining material,  Too big an oil hole. :facepalm:

So either hold some flat bar in the 4 jaw and turn to 13/16 or start with a rectangle and screw to the bottom half then file the 13/16 dia using the bottom half to guide the file. For the top mill to overall height. Then mill the two flats to the width shown. File the top, freehand and a good eye shoul ddo.

If you want you can make a infill to take the place of the bearing, drill a hole 3/32" down for a pin and make two 1/2" dia filling buttons to go on the pin.

Ha, yes, I realised that when stood in front of the mill - trying a bit of an experiment, a bit of 1/4" rod rounded off and drilled for an oil hole and then loctited into the hole of the remaining stock. I'll see if I can pretty it up tomorrow morning then part it off............if not I'll make a fresh one  ;D

Experiment failed, so started afresh ............. it turned out with a nice round edge using a profiling tool. The finished version shows an oiler so fitted one of those in ..........

Thank you, I'll remember that technique for my restorations

I'm going to take a quick pause from this engine and switch back to the Vulcan as a few supplies have arrived and I can try to get that completed  :D

Fitted the first standard to the base, the trunnion bearing to the standard but not before trying to destroy the standard; the workpiece wasn't held tight enough and slipped when milling the inner flat, luckily it only scraped the inner facing side which isn't visible but time to stop before I really do some damage

I was being cautious by not clamping the workpiece too tight as didn't want to damage it  :Lol:

Only if I try not to destroy it during manufacture!  ;D

I seem to be flip flopping between the Vulcan and Hicks build atm, not something I like doing but, parts are not arriving when I need them  ::)

The second standard is now fixed and moving onto the larger trunnion of which they have generously provided a double casting. I'll keep the other half in my box of bits as I'm sure it'll come in handy during one of my restorations
