Something I think I'd use far more often.....spindle back stop
http://mikesworkshop.weebly.com/chuck-back-stop-and-disc-alignment-tool.html

I made one years ago, not as fancy but it does work within limits. The left hand bushing is a slip fit in the spindle bore. The right end has a shoulder that bottoms on the end of the spindle and the small tapered piece causes the split mandrel to expand when tightened.

Does that work sort of like chuck 'spiders', but is adjustable as well where spiders are fixed thickness?

Yes and ostensibly, you can fit the end with what ever fitted stop you need for the job at hand.....

A handy tool to have, I made one for my small lathe (https://b56b541582.cbaul-cdnwnd.com/15a4602be4074f1b8217350ccf583f6b/200000025-1b0e41d004/EmcoC8DepthStop.pdf) many years ago and it is used frequently.

Hey Thor,
Sorry to take so long to get to this I just saw it!!
I like that design a lot! I just picked up a #3 morse taper blank too!

I ordered material for the back stop today Thor! Waiting for the weather to get bad, and I'll jump on it!

Hi Dave,
Good luck with your back stop project.

Thanks Thor,, I was thinking about this change.....what are your thoughts?
It would amount to a standardized shank on the stop itself which would let me make much smaller diameter stops....It's just an inversion of the current design.
there will be other changes to suite the SB9. but I'll post them when I get to the project.

Hi Dave,
Looks good to me, why didn't I think of that? :embarassed:

OK couldn't put this down as I have the coof, and I needed something to do...
Here it is all South Bend-erized.... I still need to figure out draw tube length....
I made this to match the Emco design but with imperial material....Samantha is that kinda lady..
-
For the actual stops, I have a 1/4-28 thread with a 60 degree socket. That should repeat well enough, and I can take a skim cut before use I suspect. I have a rage of back stops from 1/4 inch to 2 in
Should be a good start!

There Ready to build....

Hi Dave,
Your backstop looks good, and good luck with the machining process.

I can see a need for a spider plate to reach around the 3 jaw....but it's an adaptable design..

Looks good bud I built George Thomas back stop years ago with all the op attachments. Screw cutting ops and back stop ops. It’s a great attachment to have when making screws and facing off.

A bit more progress. The draw bar is 3/4" welded steel tube, with a threaded plug pressed in the end, and threaded into the Morse Taper 3 sleeve....
The Morse Taper 3 sleeve was machined and marked/indexed to the spindle so that I can put it in at the same position. As it was bored in place, do this will keep the runout of the armature down to .0005" range which is where it is now....
Coming along nicely....
-
Hi Dave,
Well done so far, you got less runout than I did.

Done!
