A few pictures of Elmer's " Slider " engine 4 X scale that I just completed. Some modifications here and there with ball bearings on the cranks and connecting rod. 93

I don't have a dividing head, never used one, so can't comment on its usefulness. I have the Sherline rotary table, which does 5 degrees of movement for each full turn of the handwheel. Its great for cutting gears. I made up a spreadsheet to do the calculations for how many turns to what number of ticks on the handwheel for any number of teeth on a gear. 95

. Someone gave me a dividing head a while ago and it's still sitting on the workshop floor in bubblewrap. I take it one of those is not essential for gear cutting? 96

Looking forward to another build and you seem to be assimilating parts from your various other builds and bringing them together into this one? 97
Your Own Design / Blockhead« Last post by PaulR on March 11, 2026, 08:08:56 PM »My next project is underway despite having only the outline of a plan. As usual it'll be a blocky bar stock build, a variation (refinement??) of the single-acting twin cylinder finished a few days ago. This time there will be a single inlet and no external pipework to the cylinders. I'll also use a scotch yoke to save a bit of space between the cylinders.
Here's all the progress I have made this evening - facing the valve block/bearing and the arms of the frame that the cylinders will be attached to. I planned on using some thinner brass for the frame but couldn't lay my hands on any so this will have to do. P.S. Don't bother clicking the thumbnail unless you're really bored as there is nothing worth looking at ![]() 98

![]() and set in place on the shafts. Still need to cut the keyways in the gears and shafts... ![]() One pair down, 2-1/2 pairs to go. The arbor needs to be turned down from the 1/2" of the Marion crankshaft to the 3/8" of the rest. These gears went quick, at 18 teeth its 4 full turns of the rotary table handle per tooth, so no keeping track of fiddly degrees. 99

Thank you for taking the time to illustrate and help explain the effect of clearance as you have. Thanks again to Roger for his input. John. |
