Help with a Little Husky ....... I think?

While I'm waiting for wood 'n' paint to arrive to finish off my Vulcan I thought I'd take a look at this Little Husky, or an attempt at one. It was sent over from the U.S. by a friend of mine who picked it up for a few bucks and thought I'd be interested.

Jason has made a splendid version of one of these, but in all honesty, I'm not sure if this is for restoration or the scrap bin so that really needs to be the first descision. Like I said no great loss financially, but I'd rather not invest a huge amount of my time if its a non-starter.

The Little Husksy is a uniflow engine but which I know nothing about, the valve mechanism was seized when I got it and the whole thing generally in poor health. I have soaked it and tried to dismantle it, snapping a few bolts and one of the columns in the process. It had a huge tap on the front which has also snapped and will need drilling out and replacing.

Here are lots of pictures and a video for you to look at and one immediate noticable thing is that both the original Little Husky and Jason's have 6 tiny holes either side of the cylinder which I think are exhaust ports whereas this has 3? Will this work or is this the fail at the first hurdle?

I would be inclined to add some more holes just to make it as easy as possible for any pressurised air to get out before the piston starts to rise again. Maybe another 4.

They need a reasonable air pressure to get going 30-40 psi would be where to try first. Also a good flick of the flywheel which wants to be firmly fitted to the crankshaft, add a flat for the grub screw if there is not one.

Okay well that's a good start, I'll add the holes ...... it's been given a good clean up and the flywheel which was wobbling is firm on the crankshaft.

I have a slot and holes in the valve, these don't appear on the drawing, if the top hole in the cylinder is the inlet, is the bottom one with a lock nut some sort of breather? I'm trying work out the orientation of the slot, from the original dismantling it was facing outwards (see photo)

Yes it looks like a secondary exhaust that allows any trapped air that is in the cylinder as the piston rises to get out so not quite a true uniflow.

Those two that I had the other week would run with a breather or the lubricator hole open but as soon as you blocked those they would stop. OK once I sorted out the timing and loose flywheel.
