Thank you Bruno, much appreciated.

Howdy Stewart,
Nice to meet you sir!
Small world I reckon.
I was on another site like this (HMEM) and saw mention of your book.
I immediately looked it up on Amazon and ordered it.
That was about two months ago.
I got inspired and have started building the horizontal engine.
So, thank you for getting me off high center and back to making 'chips' again.
Regards,
Jim

Looks like you'll have a the first test run in few days time judging by the current rate of knots?
Hope so, I'm intrigued to see if it'll run!

I was planning on using the lathe to drill the offset holes for the crank-pins but trying to use the spider, some shims to protect the edges, adjust the jaws and leave enough space to fit in the DTI was too fiddly (must be having a King Charles sausage fingers day). So I resorted to the wobbly old pillar drill, putting the workpiece(s) down at the bottom of the vice which is the only place it's likely to be anywhere near perpendicular to the drill, and kept everything clenched. In the end they came out fine; I put some long screws in to check for squareness by eye and they look pretty good. Next to make the pins and the connecting rods. Hopefully the screws I'm waiting on will arrive tomorrow and I can get rid of all these temporary fasteners.

I decided to put off loctiting the crankshaft and crankpin to the web as it becomes very difficult to assemble/disassemble everything; I imagine I'm going to be doing this several times over the course of the next few days. So......I have drilled and tapped some holes for a pair of small grub screws as a temporary measure; will fix permanently at the end.

Now cutting lengths of 8BA threaded bar to make studs ........there are a lot of them and I'm glad I bought nuts which are 1 size smaller in OD (9BA) as there are some small spaces in which thery have to fit!

Wheels are attached, just need to shorten the pins so the grub screws go below the surface. I took 0.5mm off the thickness of each so I can put a thin brass washer between them and the valve body. Also roughed out a bit of steel for the base.

there's a similar engine here based on a supercharged twingle

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zoller_supercharger

I really like the twingle, they're so simple, i'd love to own one some day.
If i was to modernise the design, then a screw type supercharger would be the way to go
and i would arrange the cylinders 45 degrees across from each other, so as to allow the use of
two con rods on a longer crank pin. the master/slave type are unreliable.

All the problems mentioned were solved a long time ago by the Junkers Jumo 205 engine. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Junkers_Jumo_205 The modern versions are being developed by Cummins and Achates. See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JoQkTIfAB2U If you trade the current blower/turbocharger system for an electric turbocharger and associated electronics you get a truly modern two stroke. See https://www.garrettmotion.com/emission-reduction/garrett-e-turbo/
