Title: MY TAKE ON RUDY'S RADIAL
Post by: sid pileski on August 25, 2021, 02:15:50 PM
After seeing some of the recent builds on Rudy's radial, I was inspired to make one myself.
However, I wanted it to look a little more like the real thing. So I modeled it up and started adding the details to make it
look more prototypical.

Time it start making chips!

Thanks Chris.

Yeah, his design was a little too plain. I think this will wake it up.
I don't know when I will actually start on it. Maybe a piece here and there.
I've got too many paying projects in line right now.

I've build the ubiquitous five cylinder wobbler radial too.

I see these as a build up to a "real" five or nine cylinder radial. Definitely on my bucket list in retirement.

Your design looks really good, Sid. The exhaust stubs are a great touch, I wish I'd thought of that!

If I had planned the touches I added to mine from the start, I too would have put the pushrod tubes at the front. Mine are a little bit hidden at the back, but it was the easier way to incorporate what was more or less an afterthought.

I also added a bunch more fasteners. Again to make it look more proto.
Going to have to be patient doing all those 2-56's!

Here is the start.
40 2-56's.
No errors!

Center case came out great - thats a lot of tapping!
Anyone ever try a double-acting version of an engine like this? Would need a lot of redesign. Anyway, this is looking great!

Excellent work!  That's a lot of tapping.  I believe I broke a tap off in that part when I made mine.  Glad you were able to complete it with no tap breakage!

And you even did extra holes above and beyond the plans!

I used a tap guide, starting and bottoming taps and butter cut for each hole.
Also, I take the part to work and at lunch time, or when in a online meeting I'll do a couple of holes.
Basically, take my time doing each.

Here is the front housing.
I'll be using shielded ball bearings instead of the bushing.

Is that stainless?

No, it's 6061 aluminum.
I'm debating to glass bead it (to look more like casting) or black anodize it???
Most of my other engines are black anodize.

Don, Chris- Thanks!

The pictures fooled me. It just didn't look very aluminumy, probably the because the finish is so fine.

Update.
Made the rear distribution housing.
I'll be using o-rings to seal the air tubes to this housing.

Here is a progress update.
Five good cylinders. (all within .0005 of .500)
I used 12L14 material, and will probably use 6061 for the pistons.

I think next part to make will be the crank, and then move on to the master and slave rods.

Yes, 12L14 cuts like butter.
Should hold up well enough in this application.

Here's my next instalment, the crank.
One piece, 303 stainless.
I made the aluminum crank offset fixture to turn the crank throw, after milling away most of the unwanted material.

Interesting idea, to use a pin to keep the throw in position

How tight / small tolerance did you have between the hole and the pin ?

Interesting idea, to use a pin to keep the throw in position

How tight / small tolerance did you have between the hole and the pin ?

It was a press fit in the aluminum, and a tight slip on the crank.
In fact, when I was turning it in the lathe, I did not secure it by any other means.
I did take light cuts and the cuts are obviously always trying to push it on the dowel pin.

Looks great Sid, and just in time.  I think I’ll steal  your idea for holding the crank  :NotWorthy: when I get there with my model.

Next, I'm going to make the air tubes to the heads. The rotary valve is done.
At this point, when the tubes are complete, it should run!

Question for those of you that have built this engine-

Did you drill the exhaust ports in the cylinders per his plans?

At this point, I have not included them.
My engine is up and running now.
I wonder if it would run any better/different with them?

It seems to run well enough on low pressure and has a nice sound to it.

Sid
Title: Re: MY TAKE ON RUDY'S RADIAL

Hi Sid. I did include the cylinder exhaust ports on my engine. After I had it running, I taped those ports off as an experiment. I noted no difference in operation, but the sound changed slightly. With the ports open the individual exhaust beats are more distinct. Closed, with all the exhaust coming out the back of the valve, they blend more, giving a slightly more muffled, smoother note. The difference is not dramatic, but is noticeable.

Looking forward to seeing your beauty shots, and hopefully a video?

Soon. Still have the rocker boxes to make and solder in place as well as the air tubes.
Need to make the faux exhaust tubes and the running stand.

Need to retire!!

I put the exhaust holes in, per plan. But I never did the experiment that Ron did.  I assumed it just eased the exhaust path since the exhaust path out through the valve is a much longer, smaller diameter path.  But clearly (according to your and Ron's experience) those holes are not required :)
