Stirling Engine Question
PaulR:
Wikipedia has an illustration of a simple alpha type Stirling engine (with two power pistons) and points out the inevitable issues with the hot end (top diagram). Is it feasible to replace this with a 'normal' displacer, seal off the end and insert an extra link as per the middle diagram? I suppose this is really just making it into a gamma Stirling but not in a configuration I've seen before which would allow lots of separation between cold and hot parts of the engine. It also occurs that the end of the power piston could be covered in the same way to reduce any loss around it but that might in unwanted compression. I suppose the whole thing could be laid out in the same horizontal plane rather than vertically to make heating/cooling easier.
Any thoughts welcome (ignore sizes, positions etc in my hasty diagrams, it's just the concept I'm thinking of!)

The schematic does not show the long heat shield on the hot piston. Look at real examples of the Alpha engine

Can you point me to a particular example?

Just do some googling. Making Stirling Engines by Andy Ross can be downloaded for free. His engines are sophisticated but there are many photos of internal parts

Thanks for this. I don't have the facilities to machine parts like that I'm afraid, I'm thinking of something much simpler I can build from bar stock.
