It was certainly full of oil but it wasn't an old bushing, it was just a piece of bar
It certainly had me thinking at the time but it seems to fit the description of Oilite http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oilite
It did get it to silver solder once the oil had burned off and I cleaned it up, but it wasn't much good as a steam valve, it leaked a bit through the metal

Sintered Brass is porous Pete and made to absorb oil.

Looking at the texture of the finish it does look like sintered bronze. Well worth putting in a labeled bag for when you need it.
