having a great deal of model woodwork in my future,, having bought some great 1/3 scale planes and tools, seeing that Lee Valley also has a 1/3 scale wood vise,, seeing that I have some nice pieces of maple that was salvaged from a massive lab table,, seeing that I have some great kiln dried white oak that will not be used on the steamboat.. I've decide to make a 1/3 scale bench-top wood working bench.. (LV also has a set of 1/3 scale bench gear, but most of that can be made in the metal shop in a few minutes) wood for the top glue-up getting all prepped...
-
Slim will be so happy that you are building him a workbench of his own!! I have a full size one very like your second picture, just a different arrangement of the drawers underneath. Very useful.
So, you are building a 1/3rd scale bench with tools. Slim can use that to reduce it another 1/3rd. That should be about the right size for my shop elves!
-
slim is 1/6th scale,, odds are he will just use the bench as a place to sleep,, or has he says "guard the shop" !!!!
-
Just make sure that Slim does not get accidentally laminated into the new bench top
-
did the top glue-up, hauled in my planer and ran it through along with some other of the salvaged maple, all cleaned up nicely, very good hard maple!! Slim says this bowling alley is way to short!!!
-
I was in the works to also build a small router table with a dremel motor, had some T slot rail, bolts and knobs on order when this popped up,, looks like it will save me a bunch of work, I'll have to build a quick table/stand for it and fill the counter sunk holes, my dremel mount should be able to be modded to mount up

Wow! That's a pretty inexpensive router table insert. Looks nice! You'll have to let us know how you like it

I am going to be following alone here. Nice piece of wood…

I don't think I could make it for that price,, I'll make a round base for the dremel router mount and use 4 of the countersunk holes that are in the plate..
top wood for the bench is all cut to size,, went through some of the stuff piles and found some parts that might become the end vise (somewhere I have some steel allthread the same as the brass)
so far things are passing Slims inspections..
-
between time bending frames getting the little workbench together,, due to having enough on hand (free) it will be all maple..
-
Looking great!
-
thanks , it's a nice little useful side project that should give years of service,, just waiting for the other vise hardware to arrive.. ready for clean-up, rounding some edges and final assembly.. looks like a bench now :cartwheel: still need to make the drawer box, the assorted holdfast and bench dogs....
-
Great little Bench
The small Vice to Slims rigth kind of reminds me of my own (my Maternal Grandfathers Journeyman Piece) - not in anyway identical - but more how the (not shown) handle will be attached
Per
-
simple dowel with knob and a knob you add,, I may turn my own with some dogwood or holly..
-
That's the cutest little bench I've ever seen!
Kim
-
It needs a holdfast shaped like Slims arm and hand!
-
thats twisted,, I like it
-
the little bench is about ready for service,, the dowel vise handles will get replaced with some turned hardwood,, have to order up some longer 3/8ths brass bolts that will quickly turned and milled into the bench dogs..
-
Looks great! Very similar to my full size one except not covered in carving chisels, chips, dust, dents...
-
I'm kind of in between in the looks department - yes it looks too shiny - but I would prefer that it never reaches the stage mine is in .... as I know my grandfather would never allow it to look as it does today - when he was alive :-[ :embarassed:
But I would suggest an oil finish to protect the wood + and the rest will come with use ;)
Enjoy using it, as the Tool it is :praise2:

turned some 3/8ths brass bolts into some bench dogs, round off the heads, mill the flat, take the shaft down to 11/32nds, cut to length,, fast and cheaper than large brass rod!!!
-
Love it….

gave the bench a quick coat of tung oil, found a drawer unit that will fit nicely and should work out well https://www.amazon.com/dp/B084QCXZ7C?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details
the little router table top arrived and looks like it will work.. simple fence adjustments, the miter slot in T-slotted so the guide will not jump out, I can mill up a few T-slot nuts to fit for holding fingerboards... shouldn't take to much time to make the base unit to mount it on.. have a new dremel 4000 to provide the power..
-
got a quick start on the router base,, all made with more of the free maple,, found a plate in my scrape pile that will become the new mount plate for the base.. one hardware store stop to correct screws and bolts,, a insert will be added to strap in and stabilize the dremel motor..
-
Perfect! And Slim can operate the switch and speed control for you!
-
just remember his full name is BTTW WFO Slim!!! (I don't let him anywhere near the lathe and mill rpm knobs)
-
made up the new mounting plate, milled the dremel holding section to give more travel (helps with the thickness of the top plate) pretty much together and ready to start cutting scale moldings and the like..
-
the under the bench drawer box arrived today,, matches nicely, has bottom edges front and back that drop over the bench's styles. Will most likely make a foam insert for the bottom drawer so tools will have their place to nest.. found my box of concrete nails,, so a set of 1/8"th, 3/16"ths and 1/4" chisels may be in the forging (standard and swan neck)
-
Perfect match.
What is Slims first woodcarving project going to be?
-
he'll most likely make an inspection tool or measuring stick..
-
The Drawers are a lovely addition to the Bench
And I can't help Staring at those lovely small Planes  and wonder about the one where the 'Steel Blade' is 90 degrees to the Cut - what is it called and what is it used for (I have one or two full size of those among all my Maternal Grandfathers Tools) ?
Per
-
That is a scraper plane, used for final smoothing.
-
yes, but a razor blade will work just as well for model work!!
-
That's really nice looking! Like it was made for it
Kim
-
Thank you - I have just read a bit about Scraper Planes and learned quite a bit :)

decided some playing with metal, torches, hammers and files was needed.. forged out six cement nails blanks, got one roughed out, the tang will get filed a little more round with a step so a small washer can get soldered as a handle stop,, this will be the 1/4" flat chisel..final shaping and edging after oil quench hardening..
-
Thats really cool! And Slim sized too!

maybe if slim was doing timber framing
a little more refined,, got a start on it's swan neck mate.. heating and beating is so much fun :hammerbash:
-
You haven't noticed the log cabin he is building in the back yard? :Jester:
-
hell he's most likely to be building a trebuchet
-
Chris ... Don't let your shop elves see that picture!!
-
Chris ... Don't let your shop elves see that picture!!
Too late... :facepalm2:
Years ago I did build wooden models of a trebuchet and a ballista. They were great fun to toss little biscuits to the dogs!
-
I've wanted to make a little larger version and combine it with a squirrel feeder,, see if the annoying grey squirrels could quickly evolve into flying squirrels
-
This kind of bird feeder does that, the weight of the squirrel sets off the motor in the base...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PfHu-UJaK0Q
-
my bird feeders are squirrel proof,, it's the ones that dig up my veggie garden and potted plants that I want to relocate,, say maybe a quarter mile or so
-

A DisneyLand for squirrels. :lolb:
-
I need one of those :naughty: Where can I get one (or two) of those bird feeders?
Mike

Mike
Just search for spinning bird feeder. I don't know if there are different brands or which is best, have only seen the videos. Make a steam powered one!

They are kind of expensive… https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00004ZB4U/ref=redir_mobile_desktop?_encoding=UTF8&aaxitk=3a4ca7e36a2eb52590a32abe4fb266fa&content-id=amzn1.sym.7dd77237-72be-4809-b5b5-d553eab7ad9d%3Aamzn1.sym.7dd77237-72be-4809-b5b5-d553eab7ad9d&hsa_cr_id=0&pd_rd_plhdr=t&pd_rd_r=509acf3b-88ba-4aad-b87d-06f6ca8d766d&pd_rd_w=wNE98&pd_rd_wg=i3wQR&qid=1680103046&ref_=sbx_be_s_sparkle_lsi4d_asin_0_title&sr=1-1-9e67e56a-6f64-441f-a281-df67fc737124

the set is getting there,, figured out how to add base collars to them,, they get driven in place will add a little silver solder so they stay in place..
-
the metalwork side is about done, collars soldered, oil quenched and hard ready for honing and sharpening.. will add some nice brass ringed handles..
-
Excellent! Slim will be all set to do the mortising on the boat frames and interior. He'll need a nice wooden carvers mallet too. Or just use his forehead...
-
I'm thinking holly and dogwood for the mallet, but I do have a box of assorted hardwoods and some true iron wood..
-
I'm thinking holly and dogwood for the mallet, but I do have a box of assorted hardwoods and some true iron wood..
Ironwood would be the accurate choice for the mallet, should turn well on the lathe. What are the handles going to be on the chisels?
-
I've got some nice and pretty dogwood,, the stuff is hard and well seasoned (at least 10 years) ultra fine grain, will not split even if you try.. turns great!! I've made gavels from it years back for some of my wife's clubs,,
-
big cup of coffee and about an hour,, cute little vesitas honing guide to set the correct angles, diamond plates and oil all ends up to wicked sharp little chisels,, I forgot that that I have some european hornbeam wood scrapes that may be used in handles or the mallet..
-
one chisel done,, wanted to check the methods before finishing the rest (I think we're good) the other handles have the rear ring in place so things should go fast if I can get the time..
-
set completed :whoohoo:
-
Excellent! :praise2:
And Lee Valley called, they'd like 10,000 sets for their Christmas catalog.
-
That's a FINE looking set of mini chisels! They'd make a fine Christmas gift :embarassed:
Kim
-
If the LV 10,000 pc order came through, Slim could do a full shift and overtime! the tools are lookin really nice!
-
Carving bench, check. Chisels, check. Mallet, sounds like its in the works. Next, Slim needs a scale tool chest!
-
Great set of Chisels :praise2:
I start to wonder if you are planing on Downsize the whole Workshop in the near future :noidea:

10,000 and think I'll stop at 6 for the time being anymore than that at time and I'd have to comandere Chris's power hammer.. :hammerbash:
