Ladies and gentlemen,
The transmission is complete! All that remains is to go back over all the drawings and refine and update them. I have spun it in the lathe and all the gears run smoothly together. It shifts as it should.

I had the idea in my head that the 'Stick' goes directly onto the box as the newer ones do, but I can see that this is not the case -> how is it connected and does it use a traditional H shaped selection pattern so to speak ?

Hi Per,
These transmissions were used in cars with the shifter on the steering column. The hand lever would go down the steering column to a selector box. The box consisted of a housing with 2 levers protruding. On the end of the shaft was a pin that would engage one lever or the other. These levers were connected to the 2 levers that you see on the side of the gear box with link rods. These link rods generally had a couple of bends in them to clear the floor pan and frame. When the hot rodding crowd wanted to use floor shifters with these side shift gear boxes they would bolt a shifter unit, made by many makers, to the rear of the main case or onto the tail shaft and connect it with the appropriate link rods.

To answer the other question, yes this was built to bolt to the bell housing on my flathead engine. I modified the bolt pattern on the trans so I wouldn't have to modify the bell housing very much.

So, have you built the fully-functioning differential and rear axle with drive shaft that you need to go with this?

(Consider I just slapped myself for that comment.)

I think the Ford I drove in high school had a transmission like this and the linkage from the steering column would sometimes jam and not shift out of first gear. That's why I had to have those big Channellock pliers with me.

I had completely forgot about the gearshift on the steering collum - even though some of the first cars I ever drove was like that - Mum's 1969 SAAB 96 V4 comes to mind.
