Now my display moves on to my three Alyn Foundry engines

First was the Robinson X Type, sometimes referred to as the "Chippy" engine because it was used in Fish and Chips on potato chipping machines.

Next came the Sphinx, a gearless engine designed by Graham Corry, and featuring the unique Robinson Star Wheel.

Finally (for now) is my current project, another Alyn Foundry design, the RLE (Roy's Little Engine).

This slide show and video shows some of the stages involved in building my 1895 Otto vertical gas engine. The engine runs on propane and uses glow plug ignition.

Excellent show so far      I'm sure that there is a lot more to see   

Some of my engines although not as elegantly displayed as the others have done 

The last picture is one for the Junior table (if there is one). This electric car was started together with my 9 year old grand daughter during home schooling time. I know it is not an engine but she has been exposed to most of the skills required to make a model engine:
-Marking out
-Hacksawing
-Filing
-Drilling
-Nuts and bolts and screws
-Turning (she turned the Delrin drive pulley)
-Soldering

Hope i'm not to late for the show.

I have no steam engine, stirling engine or farm engine stuff to contribute. Neither can I compete with the prolific output of several of our contributes. And I dont make videos.

However, I did complete two engines this year; my two Bristol Mercury MKVIII 1/4 scale radial engines. They were completed in time for the Doncaster MEX in May of this year. But due to circumstances, they have been collecting dust ever since.



Here you see the two engines side by side. One is an exploded display to allow you to view and examine both the outer and inner details of the Bristol Mercury engine. The second is fully assembled and almost ready to run









Lets start with a slide show tour around the exploded engine and then look at some of the details.

It takes a long time to look round the show and it is well worth it as there are some really impressive models on display 

I must be getting old all this walking is making me tired  or was it his Lordship getting me to carry those well seasoned castings back to the workshop  My thanks to Colin and Dave for doing the first stage of the shipping of said items. I just now have to work out how to safely move it into the house for display on the appropriate day: I think the casting/engine trolley may be needed 

In the meantime I have discovered what was in his box this morning

With the Forncett and Lowex events cancelled it looked like, due to loss of PC circumstances this might be a difficult one to attend too. But, thanks to an old laptop and WiFi technology, I find I can access some old photo albums and show you (ok, bore you) with what I might have brought along were I able to attend

Obviously it would have to be the diesels so in 'order of making' here are some repeats of what's been on here before but in collective format altogether on the one table

First off is the one that started it all - the NOVA 1



Then came the idea of (loosely) scaling up old favourite/desired model aircraft engines of my youth to a constant 5cc displacement

These are based on the ED Mk111 'Racer'



These were used to experiment with Anodising - to be correct these should really be red but I liked the colour resulting from trying 'Green' writing ink



Fired with success of the 'Racers' the Eta 15 d was the next choice. This was produced in two versions before the case was modified to take a silencer.

The Mk 1



and Mk 2



This is the 'Stockton and Jehlik modified version details of which were published in Aeromodeller magazine



A complete change of direction on the next attempted - the little 1cc Super Tigre which featured a rear rotary drum intake.



It was back to the Eta range for the next - another three engines to complete the series

The MK 3



The  Eta 'Elite' (similar to the Mk 3 but  differing slightly internally)



and finally the Eta Elite Mk 2 - considerably different to all previous versions and a favourite of all engines done so far save one.



A 2.5cc correct size version using an original crankcase was done - seen here with it's larger counterpart. background is the original article.



Next came a pair of Italian 'Atomatics' - not scaled up as the others but made to home produced drawings to the original 5cc

One was 'blinged' and polished



The other (blue) similar to the prototype - always felt the anodising on this was a mistake and wished I had left it self coloured.



After a long break the ED MK4 3.46 Hunters were scaled up too



Closely followed by the last of the diesels (so far) the Oliver Tiger Mk 3. Three were made, all being my outright favourite engine of those made so far



Well that's the diesel end of the table but, just to put a few fumes in the air - there's nothing like the smell of diesel etc.... Here are three random 'run' pics







To finish off the corner of the table this is the 14cc spark ignition engine drawings for which were published here on MEM





And finally no display would be complete without 'bits' - So here is the engine that never was (and not likely to ever be now) The parts for the Bentley BR2




Well that's it - a virtual display for a virtual show. I hope that's an acceptable 'display' as currently I am unable to lay out one for real and take new images.
On that note I hope I haven't kept you talking too long - time for you to move on to the next table but do come back later when the display changes - I guess boats and planes are allowed besides engines?

Lots of good engines appearing on the tables so far.

I managed to find an empy one and thought it would be good to take a group shot of all my "series 24" engines that have been built over the last few years. These are either based on existing designs often scaled up or down from the original drawings and modified to be made without castings, all are 24mm bore. There are also some that are my own design being based on little more than a photograph of an actual engine or model as well as one conversion.



As the lighting at the show is not ideal I will use some earlier photos to name each one.

Chuky, scaled down from the Alyn Foundry CHUK design


Thompstone Workshop Engine Scaled down from a GA drawing in an early copy of Model Engineer


Oscillator, own design based on photos of a model seen at several exhibitions


Muncaster's Simple Entablature Engine, scaled up from soem general arrangement sketches


Wee Robbie, a scaled down version of the Alyn Foundry's rendition of Robinsons hot air engine


Vertical, own design with inspiration from several sources


RMC Type-A, casting kit bored out and converted to 4-stroke with epicyclic gearbox


Woody, own design air engine based on Forest 1/13th HP engine


Lil' 36 Midget, scaled down with alterations from 1936 Popular mechanics design


Filer & Stowell, own design of rocking valve engine based on images of original engines


Thompson Engine, based on photos of originals. Only work in progress, I had hoped to get this one finishe dfor the show but got distracted, more of that later!

Well old Cletus heard about the show through the coconut telegraph and decided to pay at the door and take a look see. I did hear that Jo inquired if I would be able to handle the food concessions, but, due to the pandemic, my availability has been severely hampered  :cussing. Guys, y’all have done an awesome job of keeping the modeling spirit alive and for that I applaud you; the show is awesome. I haven’t forgot y’all, but with my new interest in smithing and with my dad passing away, I’ve been busy figuring out how old Cletus is gonna finish his time “in the old shid”.  I will admit that after this show I’ve been somewhat revived and y’all might just have to suffer through another “Cletus Build “ before long. Once again, I’ve really enjoyed all that’s been shown

The Club mascot always gets a good spot. 11 members of the metro detroit metalworking club made parts for this one. We came together on a weekend and put it all together and it worked.
