A special thank you goes out to George Britnell for the idea of doing this. It's a great idea, and the team here at MEM obviously agrees!

Thanks George!

A couple of boxes of cookies and a bribe, and Surus let me in the back door of the arena to claim a table! :paranoia:

The shop elves are very excited about the show, they have been cooped up with me for so many months now, not sure if they will come back after being set free - going to leave out some extra plates of chocolate chip cookies as a bribe, and put maps home in their backpacks....

Chris,
What a fantastic stand of your models. Well worth the entrance price to the show.. Hope you managed to round up the shop elves

Gen and I will be displaying on our table something different each day. My stuff includes models under way and finished. I will be showing them as I do at shows. Gen usually has some small display and is always working on a project while at the table. We both get lots of questions from the public and that along with not seeing our friends is what we really miss this year. Especially the younger crowd as they are very inquisitive and ask questions their parents would not even ask though they wanted to ask the same question. As we said in the video - on with the show.

Bob and Gen

Today is steam Engine Day

On the left is my small collection of steam engines. From left to right is Stuart #9, you guessed it – a Sirius, and a Coles Scotch Yoke. Gen has a collection of “toy” steam engines, over 140 of them, as well as their accessories. Here are a few of them a Falk, a Weeden Steam Roller, Krauss Boat Swing, Weeden Traction Engine, a Doll Twin Cylinder, and a Bing Cobbler. Many of us got our start in model engineering with "toys" like these.

Now the doors are open, I thought I had better set up early, before everything gets too crowded.

Now, “early” might need some explanation. It’s actually 1:30 pm, August 29 here in sunny down under. At GMT +10, we have a slight advantage over those with greater time zone challenges.

First things first, get the catering under control. Cape seed bread or gluten free for those who need it, cold chicken, beetroot, tomato, fresh baby spinach leaves out of the garden, with relish or mayo as desired. We just call it sandwiches here. Not sure if “butty” also applies. Perhaps someone can translate. Oranges, mandarins, and apple to follow, along with tea and coffee all afternoon.

Now to pick a spot for my table. Despite being the last day of winter, we have a lovely sunny day, so outdoors it is. Though I had better skip the table cloth idea, as the wind would take it away, along with whatever is sitting on it.

I liked the position under the banksia (bottle brush) but the only space would block the path from the front gate. Not a good idea with the groceries being delivered during lockdown here in Melbourne.

I decided that under the camellia was nicely sheltered from the wind, so I set up my table there.

So here is my table all set up. Glad the parking was not too far away, as it took quite a few trips.

The barbecue is set up in the shadows to the left of the table for Ron, so here is my contribution.

When I have finished lunch, I will fire up some of the models, and run others over the next couple of days.

Welcome, and enjoy the show.

PS Can anyone advise whether demonstrations should be added by ending this post later, or by adding a new post?

:headscratch: Where is everyone, I expected it to be a bit more crowed by now :noidea:

I've found the Buttie supplier :P and am about to set up my table.

I've sent Surus off for an explore - It is safer for him because he does like to stand exactly where I am just about to put down a heavy model :ShakeHead:

Give me another half an hour and I should have the table set up :)

I have finished setting up the table. Today's theme is Stirling and Vacuum engines:

For those of you who are into videos I have done a flyby video...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p74hmoF_5nY

But here is each engine one at a time:

Starting on the far left is my quarter scale Robinson:

Behind it is the half scale one:

Then there is the CHUK 1:

In the middle is the Rider Ericsson:

The second CHUK a CHUK 2:

On the right side is the two Henrici engines, the first is Edgar Westbury's original:

Behind it is a rather larger one which is the size you can buy the plans for:

In the front are two Orphans, the first is the Atmospheric Gas Engine:

And the other is a rather sorry Scott Vacuum engine:

While I have been busy setting the table up his lordship has been off seeing what he can find and has just come back with a box :noidea:

Hi Jo, I am here, and I saw Chris, and also Bob and Jen a little earlier.

That is a very impressive display you have set up. Really lovely to see those engines of yours running. Some very interesting models, and fascinating to watch.

I am looking forward to seeing all the other displays.

Sorry that I'm a bit late setting out my wares but I decided to have a quick look around the trade stands first for any bits of barstock that may have any engine parts hidden inside.

Anyway here is myfirst table, as I said in the other thread I like to see new models when I visit a show so that is also what I have brought along. Although some may have seen them before on the web there is nothing like looking at a show so this is my work over the last 12months.

Now for a look around my table, then if you are good and don't touch I'll get some running and there is also a bit of bonus content for those that stay around until the end.

Here is a selection of models I have built over the last 50 years as a model engineer
I started off to build a GWR railway engine as it was my prime interest at the time, as my experience grew, I broadened my outlook and took on more challenging projects.
My view of this hobby is it has to be fun, yes frustrating at times but once you get over the problems and finish a model there is great satisfaction to be had, while considering the next challenge!

3in Burrell Traction Engine built from Plastow castings

A Swan marine engine from Stuart castings

Fowler Ploughing engine 2in scale

Bentley ¼ scale BR2 9 Cylinder Rotary engine

Mc Onies Oscillating engine

Fowler Road Loco 2in scale built from Plastow castings

Stuart No9 modified

Hi Jason, that’s an impressive display for one years models. If I only showed this years models, the table would be very light.

It’s surprising how much the progress in each post adds up when you have the whole years output on the table together.

Great to see them all working.
