Bosch-Combi lathes refurbishing.

I have owned a Bosch-Combi lathe for many years.  It was manufactured in 1963 for the German Federal Armed Forces. This machine is housed in a wooden box with all accessories.
A few weeks ago I was offered another lathe of the same type for a few Euros.
The hook to this thing was, the complete cross slide was missing. Other missing parts I could add from my extensive fundus or simply rebuild.
The cross slide I had to make completely new.
At first I had planned to make the basic support from a welded construction.
My welding skills have not improved since my training 45 years ago.
I finally made the basic support from a grey cast iron block.
The other components I made from blank stretched steel.

I started out very similar to you as I was given a “Picador Pup” when I first started work at 17. This is a very crude version of the Bosch aimed at wood working, but I spend many happy hours learning to cut and turn wood. This lathe in a box system is also shown on the lathes web site.

I never knew the "Picador Pub" before. I only found out about it when I got a note from bion.
The device is very similar to the Bosch-Combi device of the very first version from the early 50s.
The Bosch company finally developed the device further and sold it until the end of the 70s - beginning of the 80s.
Even some of the first features could still be used until the end of production.

It cannot be ruled out that Bosch was inspired by the Picador device. The devices are already very similar.

There is no independent four-jaw lathe chuck for the Bosch lathe. I found a chuck in the right size from Proxxon. It was originally built for the PD 250 E machine. The chuck was screwed directly onto the 40 mm spindle of the Proxxon PD 250 E.
I made a corresponding adapter for the Bosch lathe, which was finished on the Bosch lathe. This ensures good concentricity. However, this is not really relevant for a lathe chuck of this type.

Normally, my two Bosch lathes are purely exhibition pieces that I like to demonstrate at events. The set-up and conversion work is a bit too much for me to work with them.
But a four-jaw lathe chuck is an interesting addition to the equipment.
Many a model engineer has been happy to be able to reproduce a part that was broken at an exhibition.
Both machines were on display here.
