George Thomas Pillar tool manufactured without castings.
« on: July 09, 2020, 09:36:15 AM »
In the book of Geo.H.Thomas I found the drawings for this project.
I made the device without the offered castings.

The arms and the table, I made from 40mm x 40mm continuous casting from the steel dealer, from the full material.

The base is made from parts of the scrap bucket.

It looks very nice  :)

I made myself one using the available castings a few years ago: https://www.modelenginemaker.com/index.php/topic,2911.0.html I find it very useful.

Many milling operations were necessary to make the arms look like castings.
The machine is in my office and is sometimes used for very small parts.

I have equipped the device with a finger plate.

Nice job on the pillar tool Bruno!
Also thanks for the link to your web site, Google does a pretty good job of translation to English.

That is very nice Bruno, and the full extra equipment and the finger plate make it a highly useful addition to the workshop.   I have made two pillar tools and mini drills using castings  ( one was for a friend ), also a finger plate, and have found the tool most useful, including for drilling very many holes of 0.25 mm ( ten thou ) diameter..

Dave...

Yes, the machine is ideal for very small drillings. My workpiece drilling machine has a maximum speed of 3200 rpm. That's not enough for such small drills.

Great work. You've done a great job of making it look like it's made of castings . I've been looking into making one of these as they're useful tools

I have had a set of castings in the shop for about the last 10 years Kids, 2nd marriage, work and other hobbies have kept me from the shop. Now that the kids are all moved out, and my tabletop gaming is on hold with the Covid change I have been back in the shop. I really have been enjoying myself. I have a few engines I want to build and then the Pillar tool is next on my list.

Yes, the device is really good and it is not yet complete.
Again and again one finds components which one can still make.
Since I do not build large clocks, I have not realized the production of these accessories.
Meanwhile I have installed a sewing machine motor with 180 watts from Chinese production for the drive of the drilling spindle. The original motor from  German-Demokratic-Republic is smoketed.
