45 mm internal cir-clip
« on: June 07, 2020, 06:24:11 PM »
Working on my MC and broke a internal cir-clip that holds in a filter basket. The part is NLA from the dealer. The broken clip is .66mm thick while the new stock 45mm clip is 1.7mm thick.
Any ideas on how to “grind” down the thickness??
Honda forum had no suggestions.
Thanks in advance for any help.

I would superglue it in a pocket on the end of a piece of bar and turn it down.

Excuse me for not understanding completely where the circlip goes ...?

But if it is inside the engine or on anything safety related - PLEASE get the right one and do NOT modify it !!!!
I have seen engines smashed because of a circlip that was only 0.1mm too big in diameter and in that case I even recommended not to use it but to wait for the right one, but the owner was in a hurry so I put it in and the engine lasted TWO miles -> he blamed me ever after for the destruction of his engine

I thought those cir-clips where hardened steel. That’s why I was thinking grinding.
I might try to dissemble the oil filter and widen the groove. It might just fit in my Sherline lathe.
Ill cut the bore size in a bar like you suggest and then try grinding.
Thanks for the idea.

The correct size is not available. I looked high and low for a “thin” cir-clip The standard size will not fit in the groove. That’s why modification is necessary.

If the slot can be machined wide enough for a standard part then that would seem to be a permanent fix.

It sounds like you are talking about the centrifugal filter bowl on the end of the crankshaft, my 1973 XL250 has that style of filter too.
Have you tried David Silver Honda in the UK ?

Surface grinder would fix that in a hurry. Can help if wanted.
