Steam engine (Tiny horizontal double acting, maybe with reverse)
« on: November 03, 2012, 07:44:44 PM »
Gentlemen,
One more engine in the 'Tiny' series. This time a horizontal version. I might even make it with a reverse mechanism. There was no way to cut the entire base from one piece so I layed out the base to see how I could make it in 2 pieces and still have it look like a casting, or 1 piece. By cuttting a slot in the base and recessing the side wall of the cylinder a little for it to overhang the top surface it almost looks like one piece. The cylinder is mounted with 2, 0-80 socket head screws from underneath.

George: Nicely done on such a small scale. Will be following along also. Thanks for posting your build. Roger

Enjoy watching your progress with your tiny engines and seeing what is possible at such a small scale.

George

Your an inspiration.    :agree: :agree:

I only wish I could achieve machining little parts like that.

Alas! I fear I would be forever loosing them in the scratches in my bench top.

Thank you for sharing

Brilliant - and I was joking when I mentioned a horizontal in the other thread!

Some of the horizontal castings I've noticed do have 2 base castings anyway.

That is amazing, George.  I like the cylinder mounting solution.  I can't imagine how you achieved the external curves with the ball end mill. Did you crank that in by eye, set up a pivot, or do it on an RT?  Is it magic? Or can you show us?

Gentlemen,
Here's today's update. I started on the cylinder. At first I thought ok, just another one of many but then I decided to make this one look like a casting instead of smooth like it had lagging on it. I started by turning  a piece of stock to get a true cut on the outside and boring the the cylinder bore.
From there the stock was moved to my dividing head. The trued up od. gives me a good surface to indicate and measure from. The valve face was cut first followed by milling off the radius by taking small steps.

The next steps were center drilling with a 00 center drill and drilling the appropriate holes for the valve chest holes and the ports.
