Hi Keith.
The assembly carrying the brushes is called the Armature Reaction Compensator so yes - the wooden handle does adjust the position of the brushes which is necessary because of magnetic field distortion. I can’t explain it so I’ve added this link to a website that appears to cover the subject in depth.
