decided not to cast the smokestack hinge parts,, will do  built up soldered sections,, decided to turn the hardest part first.. the angled ring that fixes the lower hinge to the tapered shell, adjust the compound and let the turnings fly.. Slim back at work inspecting..

more work on the stack-hinge-ring..  Slim thinking we are getting ready for the Olympics, the center rings have bevel that fits together upwards to keep the smoke in the stack.. a strip of brass sheet  that went through the 3 in 1 metal machine forms the base that the stack will slide down on. it sits in a groove for soldering,  the bottom bevel ring also has a groove to fit into so all stays in alignment, have to mill and solder the stock for the hinges and the the rings they fit.. the later ring on the restored 40ftr allows for movement in four directions mine will only allow for and aft..

getting a little unhinged today,  made blanks for the hinges and silver soldered the drilled rod in place,, had to cut each section off with a hand jeweler's saw, (i need a slitting saw arbor with a thinner blade retainer..) have mount up a chuck on the mill so the rings can get the fitting recesses cut in them.. Slim says I'm overworking his inspection time..

Nice clean hinges. With all these teensy parts, Slim is going to need a jewellers loupe.

Great looking subassembly, just right thicknesses on the parts!  Those little Ti strips are very handy for holding small parts!
