A friend of mine has an Anycubic Kossel Delta Linear plus printer and I am truly amazed how much machine you get for the price and how great it works.  Yes, it's a kit but it is very high quality.  If I was a better 3D CAD jockey, I'd buy one right now.  https://www.3dprintersbay.com/anycubic-kossel

If the 4Max Pro is of similar quality, it should be great.

Hi DICKEYBIRD,
thanks for your comments.
In the meantime I have found some more information about this new 3D printer in a German specialists forum also.
All the comments about the first usage of this printer has been positive from different users.
So I have done my decision and the order button was pressed.
Coming from an European warehouse it is likely that it will arrive today already. If I do believe into the tracking information.
So another box Pandora's box will be open soon.
10 years ago I have said that I do not need any CNC milling in the shop, since nearly 6 years now it is part of my model engineering and I donīt want to miss it anymore.
May be this 3D printing will be a similar story in the near future.

I think you'll be very happy with it Achim.  I want a  Kossel Delta Linear really bad after seeing how good it is but alas, there just isn't enough time.  The CNC lathe still lacks a few details for it to be running usefully again...the CNC mill project is a long way from being finished...the induction heater project is about 75% done...not to mention the shiny new Deckel grinder clone that arrived last week needs it's new spot set up properly.  So many projects...so little time. :'(

Hi everybody, here my first experience with this brand new 3D printer.
Unboxed, power connected, seeing and hearing a nice Intro at the display, trying to select the next menu for the homing function by the touching the touch screen, no reaction of the machine. After half an hour I was sure, I should be able to switch a printer on and select an other menu by the touch screen, so there must be a damage at the printer.
The only idea was, to check all the wiring and connectors, so I had to disassemble the whole thing.
At the end I have found a damaging at the top left corner at the glass of the touch screen.
A ticket at Anycubic support center is made, so lets see what will happen.

My intention was to buy a plug&play system and to start immediately with the printing, so I have invested EUR 500.

Until now I have got "plug&play" distributed  all over my room, a not working printer and the never ending hope to get a spare touch screen as soon as possible.

And yes I forgot, additionally a quality pass, which definitive does not belong to my printer.

Greetings Fumopuc, I hope that your replacement parts arrived and you are printing. I too just recently dived into the 3D printer arena. I originally found one that was very modestly priced, it was an Anet A10. It arrived and was an "Erector Set of pieces. Do not get me wrong here as it has been a fully capable printer, especially with printed parts made to assist in rigidity. It has supplied me with endless hours of satisfaction, both in putting it together, tweaking and fine tuning it, and finally getting parts printed. While I was putting this one together, I spied another printer that was only a few dollars more, but was much more rigid, right out of the box and would require a lot less gaffing about to get up and running. It was a Cruelty model Ender3. I ordered two of them and traded one to a friend of mine. His was operational within a week and he helped me in tweaking mine. There are a number of things I want to tryout, the first being able to CNC of sorts a block of wax for lost was casting. You can print up a bolt-on adapter that takes the place of the hot end of the printer and when a high speed spindle is held with it, the printer becomes a light capacity CNC mill.

Hi Jim
I am glad to see your endorsement of the Ender 3.

I am about to buy an Ender 3 Pro as well. It has a great support ecosystem online in various places. Also lots of advice on upgrades and tweaks.

I expect to use it for making PLA 'lost wax' patterns from some small castings as well as some fixtures for my Alexander D-bit grinder. The small spindle idea also suits me fine, I need to engrave 12 displays worth of 0-9 digits in plexi later this year for a 1958 Univac II Console panel re-animation project :-)

Hi Gerrit, I bought an Ender-3 a few months ago. Worked fine right out of the box, easy assembly. Great prints if you do careful assembly, just like Myfordboy says in his youtube channel. I'm very happy with mine. It is excellent value for money, in my opinion. It was the first such machine getting good reviews (from people I respect) I could afford.

Did some minor upgrades :

-installed Creality glass bed - first layer adhesion is far better with the glass than the flex pad supplied. I set the bed temp at 66 deg for PLA to compensate for the glass thickness. Bed temp is actual 60 deg.
-installed an all-metal extruder head system - the supplied plastic parts were creeping and filament sometimes skipped - fixed w metal extruder
-installed heavier bed level springs - these hold the bed level adjustment much better than stock springs.

Michael Laws at "Teaching Tech" on youtube has some excellent videos about the Ender-3 and really knows it cold. All sorts of more complex upgrades there too, should you wish to go there in future.

Thank you for the upgrade suggestions, there are many to choose from so a shorter list is great :-). Mine will apparently come with a Silicon Carbon Glass Bed. I will be buying semi-locally (40km drive) at a store so if I have issues there is someone to talk with.

I subscribed to Teaching Tech's Patreon account last night after watching many of his YouTube videos, great source of no nonsense information, not just for this particular printer.

Achim: I likely will spend the same amount of money as your Anycubic 4Max Pro over time, e.g. touch screen, filament break detector, enclosure for ABS etc but this way I can ease into it. Also monthly hobby-budget friendlier this way.

Hi Gerrit, I'm in the middle of building a low cost enclosure for my Ender-3 to try printing polycarbonate and TPU (rubber-like) filament. It's based on one 4' x 8' sheet of 3/4" thick expanded polystyrene white foam - $14 CDN at Home Depot - and some PLA printed joiners to hold it all together. The front door is hinged with PLA hinge parts and held shut with magnets. If you are interested I can send you a file set. Cheers Jeff

Hi Per, first good news,

So letīs see which way they do offer to get it as soon as possible.
My hope is, that there are spares in the European warehouse available too.

Plug & Play 3d Printer part #2.
After several mails between China and Munich, Germany, it was agreed that the spare display/touch screen card board will be sent to my address shipped from China, because of no stock of spare parts in the European warehouse until now.
Last Friday they have asked me in a friendly way to give a rating for their support service.
In my understanding a bit to early, because from my side no reason to close the ticket already, because for me and my printer nothing has changed so far.
So I have asked for a tracking number of my shipment with spares.
The answer was, they do apologize but until now they could not send the display , because it is out of stock.
The Anycubic purchase department has reordered at the sub supplier already and the delivery is in transit.
So I am still a happy owner of a non printing plug & play 3d printer, disassembled and undressed on the table.

Spending EUR 500 so far for a comfortable plug & play solution, getting the plug & pray version and having no glue if it will ever print.

I have tried to find the spare display anywhere in the net, also in the Ali express Anycubic Shop, but without any success so far.

Kind Regards
Achim

Hoping for a very satisfactory resolution to the problem.

Oh man - that is bad service  :(

My experience with the Chinese professional companies is good

BUT - the same can absolutely NOT be said for the semi pro companies that you find on Aliexpress etc. - while some of the products are ok - the service is not service at all and if you give them a less than perfect rating it is NOT posted on the sellers site.....

3D printer Saga next part.
After getting the new display on last Friday, I have save sent a note to China, that I have got it.
One hour later there was a new mail from the friendly Anycubic support in my in box, which says, that it will most likely, that the worker who has sent the display has forgotten to flash it with the firmware. Attached was an explanation how to do it and a ZIP file with the relevant files.
The flashing will be done by a micro sd card, prepared with files from the ZIP folder, which has to be plugged into a slot at the back side of the card board.
So during the usual Saturday shopping tour a quick stop in the local electronic store was made to by a micro SD card with adapter, because I didn`t own one until now.
Back at home the firmware was copied to the micro sd card, the printer put be back on the bench, the anti static bag unclosed, I have taken the card board out and I have been in a very good mode to reassemble everything.
Unfortunately I get stopped again just in middle of the first action, when I have had  the cable with the socket in my right hand and the display in my left hand to plug it in.
There was nothing to plug it in at the new display card board  :cussing:

After putting my first frustration into the bin under the bench, the decision was done to try an unsoldering of the JST XH 6 pin connector from the old card board.
As you can imagine, the attempt was  not really successfully, as shown in the pictures below.
For me it was difficult with my 25 watt discounter soldering iron, to get the heat in the right way to all 6 pins.
I have get it out, but do not want fit this connector into the new display/card board.
So at the late Saturday afternoon another trip was done downtown to another electronic specialist shop in Munich to get this bloody connector.
After putting the part on the desk there, the first answer of the friendly guy at the counter was , "Yes, we have" and he disappeared between the shelves.
A couple of minutes later he come back with a small box and yes 6 pin connectors inside but the straight type and not the 90° bend pin version.
So I have spent EUR 2,60 for an order of 5 pieces and they will be send next week by post to my home.
This morning I have found the connector also at an ebay shop and I have spent another EUR 2,50 to be sure that I will get something next week.

So my wish to get an plug&play 3 D printer is more and more changing into an IT soft and hard ware training course for newbies.
Kind Regards
Achim

Wow, that's terrible Achim. :(  A complete opposite of my friend's Kossel Delta Linear plus experience.  Of course that one is a kit that requires careful assembly.  All the packets of parts he showed me were complete & very well thought out with very good instructions.  However, he is an Astrophysicist with a PhD in computer science so I guess any electronic kit is child's play to him. ::)

Looks like they are far better manufacturers of kits than ready-to-use products.  Is the one you bought a product that was recently introduced?  Maybe you're an unfortunate part of their early-days teething problems.

When I bought my Creality Ender-3 printer I had my fingers crossed that the electronics would work OK and that all the mechanical bits would be in the box and fit. Lots of people had given it good reviews on Youtube but until it is in your hands you can't be sure. I was happy to find that the unit assembled and worked great right out of the box. Electronics have been just fine. It's a terrific machine at a great price.

I would not be so patient if PCB's were missing connectors and the firm wasn't sure if the replacement parts had firmware or not.  :cussing: Does not inspire confidence. I hope they get you working replacements fast, ie by courier, to make it right with you. If not, get a refund, and have a look at the Creality machines. They have the Ender models, but also a new model is out, the Sovol. It has a direct drive extruder and the bed and extruder have capability of much higher temps than previous machines, so you can print elastomers, PC, etc as well as PLA and ABS or PETG. Price is still very low.

Good luck.

We do have professional un-soldering equipment at work and even with that, I would not have attempted to unsolder the connector in one go ...!... or should I say, that my priority is always not to harm the PCB if it is intact. So I usually take a fine cutter and cut the difficult part into smaller bits, so i can un-solder one pin at a time. Since you had the opposite problem I would have used a saw or mill on the PCB, so there only is a small piece of PCB on each pin.

We have professional 80W soldering irons and even those will have a problem with your connector. I often use the soldering iron on one side of the PCB while heating the other side with the un-soldering iron and when the solder flows - pull the trigger and hopefully remove all solder in that joint.

I hope that you get out on top of this one soon - best wishes

Per

Latest news from China this morning, they do apologize and a new display will be shipped today.
Tracking number will be available soon.
So I have the following irons in the fire now:
6 Pin 90° JST XH connector from a German ebay supplier shipped yesterday by post.
6 Pin 90° JST XH connector, ordered by Conrad Electronics last Friday, should in my home during this week.
One new PCB/display without the above mentioned connector on the bench.
One new PCB/display, likely in the same condition as the above, ordered on top by myself at AliExpress from a general electronics seller (2968 available), probably firmware and JST xh connector missing.
One new PCB/display, original spare part prepared from Anycubic, hopefully sent today.

So far the reality compared with my plug&play wish when starting this project some weeks ago.

Last but not least, I would like to mention, that I have get always a quick response from them and always with a concrete idea what to do next.
So they really try hard to offer a good customer after sales service, but unfortunately in this case fully under the influence of  "Murphy's Law".

Hi everybody,
after getting the right connectors, heating up my 25 Watt discounter soldering iron and doing a basic learning course "how to reduce the a partition of a micro SD card proper" we do have some success now.
Another Pandoras box is open now and we do have the first 3D prints.
Right side a G-Code, getting from somebody else, made for this printer.
Left side my own first attempt to configure a print with Cura.

Hi everybody, thanks for following along and all the friendly comments.
After some more R&D work, now my first real project.

The box for collets is just in progress, estimated finish will be tomorrow morning.
Apologizes for the color, but this filament was a kind of bonus delivered together with the printer.
As someone else has mentioned already, it will never get lost, it will be visible at any place in the shop.
Another advantage, never ever one of the shop gnomes or elves will take it away because it will lead me to their hidden home.

...and here the rest of the first real project story, the box.
Printing the cover and inlay was nearly 3,5 hours each, the box 21 hours.

Achim,

Looks like you are going to have a lot of fun with that new tool - what's the next proper project you have lined up for it?

I just purchased an Ender 3 Pro.  I bought this brand because a friend at work had purchased the Ender 3 and loved it and it worked great straight out of the box. On advice from reviews I bought it on Amazon from Comgrow because the reviews said they offered good support and that Creality(the factory) did not respond.  Anyway I got it and it was easy to assemble and it printed first try.  The prints however were brittle and stringy and were not right.  I contacted Amazon which connected me to Comgrow and they worked with me for a couple of days trying different things to find the problem.  I was a little frustrated, but also very impressed how quick they were to get back to me and seemed genuinely concerned to make me happy with their product.  After a couple of days of back and forth with China we had it up and running and it has performed perfectly ever since.  Another advantage with Amazon is that you do have a window of time that you can return it for credit.

I am having a great time drawing projects in Fusion 360 and printing them.  I have it on a bench behind my desk at work, so i can be around to keep an eye on the printer for some of the longer prints which can take hours and days

Good luck with your 3d printers.    Mike Nay

Hi Simon, I think first I have to change my mind a bit and press this thing into creative running processes.
It is similar like it was with the CNC mill, if you have it, you will learn that you never will use a RT again. Before I could not imagine.
A German fellow, who has seen my 5C collet box, asked me immediately, why you donīt have designed round corners at the box ???
He explained my, that the printer must stop and accelerate at every 90° corner, if it is a radius he will follow with full speed around the corner and will save printing time.
Be sure I didn`t think in that direction before.

So what's your first impression of the machine?  Did it live to your expectations?

If you do the CAD on Fusion360, do you still need to use the Cura software?

Hi Vince, it is very fine so far.
Fusion360 does create the model.
In Cura it will be changed into a printable object, with outer skin and infill and additional information for the printer, heat, layer thickness........................
At the end Cura creates the G-code which will be the command for the printer to do his job.

Achim, there are so many decisions to make when printing with plastic :-)
E.g.

- layer height smaller than .12 is not worth it for most uses.
- Greater than 15% infill is not worth it for many objects such as your box.

I presently use Cura, but when my hobby fund allows I will move to Simplify3D.

Hi Gerrit, to be honest, I am still working with some basic generic Cura settings for all type of printers with PLA.
Is a recommendation of a German 3D printer forum. I have modified the size of the table and the retract, because my Anycubic 4max Pro has a direct extruder, thatīs all.

During the last week, I have given the printer always some work for the night shift. My little beginners project is an automatic transmission, with planetary gears, like it is used in the automotive industries.
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:34778
So far I have all the gears, pins, the carrier and the annulus made and already assembled.
Everything does move with each other not really freely but it is turning around.
Currently the printer is busy to make the stands.
Kind Regards

And here the final pictures of the project. It is working exact in the same way as shown in the video at thingiverse.
Remarkable in my eyes the construction of the stands and the brakes in it  as one single to print component, but in reality there are two parts in it.

Achim good going on getting that machine working. Sounds more like a kit printer than one printing out of the box.

look like you have been having a bit of fun.

@ Vince

F360 is the Cad step

cura is a CAM step aka slicer that generates gcode
then the host program runs the g code

and firmware makes it all happen.

Hi John, thanks.
All printing together took something between 20 and 25 hours during last week.
The printer was mostly loaded with more than one part at the table and started in the late evening so working in the night shift only.
The longest load was about 4 hours, I think that was the carrier for all the small gears.

Kind Regards
Achim

I expect to use it for making PLA 'lost wax' patterns from some small castings as well as some fixtures for my Alexander D-bit grinder.
Why not just print in wax. it is a bit more expensive $50 usd a kilo  and you will have to tweak the firmwar as the print temp is below th normal plastic safety limit.

a. Extrusion temperature = 140°C-150°C

b. Bed temperature = 80°-90°C

c. Shells = 2-3 (for most models)

d. Print speed is typically 20 to 70mm/s

e. Prints best when layers have enough time to cool. This can be achieved in several ways. A skirt/brim with all layers, active cooling fan (on low), printing multiple identical items, sacrificial pillar, or extra pause time between layers.  A caution here is to not cool too fast.  This will cause exaggerated warp.

I would need to do some finishing on the prints, sanding, filling etc. which might be easier on the PLA as it is sturdier. The other issue is that USD49.95 plus the usual high shipping costs to Canada add up to close to CAD100 or more, which cuts into my hobby fund rather a lot. But it is good to know I have that option, would certainly require lower burnout temperatures. I made some machineable wax a few years ago using left over candles and shopping bags, worked ok. Best I don't think about extruding my own filaments though, I need to work on an actual project soon, I keep making tools instead :-)

I will ask at the local 3D printing shop here if they have a source, thank you for the suggestion.

Gerrit
