Thanks for the replies and advice, the challenge is in making the quadrants and then placing  all the parts and keeping them in place. I'm making some progress now with some templates and it seems possible now with lots of patience. I've added a few more pics showing how I cut the mitres and a jig to hold the rings and sand off the excess, also a pics of my original model which I'm pleased with.

That looks great, Geoff.  I thought of all sorts of guides and templates except for the external template that you are using and which is clearly the best answer,
