Finishing the flywheel...It is cast iron and I have been using my 14" bastard file to get through the hard chilled skin. Also using files on cast iron ,although not being too sharp and new they are still quite effective and fast on cast iron, and you can really put your weight behind it. I think it is something to do with the molecular structure ??!!!

Hi John ,yes it is a laborious task and trying to file down all the surfaces is made easier with curved files !! I have quite a few so it makes the job easier

They are called riffler files  ;)

Hi Jo, Yes riffler files  and I think every different one has its own name ??  They do have numbers on some of them so I presume you look in a cat and ask for the No...!!
Almost ready for the paint  but every time I look at it I see a bit more that needs smoothing out !
A happy seasons greeting and a prosperous new year

Thanks Terry and this is the last major part to make and paint up...Also I was clearing up my drawers and food this solid silver badge that I bought some time ago. It has a 1943 hallmark and I suppose engine builders use to wear them at their meetings to show their allegiance to the party. Looks like a quadruple expansion steam ship engine ...so..I suppose id better make one so I can wear it with pride / !!

Hi Willy, beautiful job on that flywheel.  Your skill with the files never ceases to amaze me.

And yes, a quad expansion engine would be a fitting next model.  Do you have one nearby to get some dimensions from?  Or a plan?  But we need a video of the this one completed first.  So near now.

I do hope you have had a happy Christmas celebration.  Best wishes for the new year.

Hi MJM , thanks for this and one of the 'secrets' is to use files that have the same shape as the profile that one is filling...

I have rigged up my old pillar drill to run as a milling machine . I have used the compound cross slide from the Pultra lathe and the pillar has been extended to get the room under the tool !..the next job with this is to make an accurate Z axis part ...

The flywheel has been painted and will take a few days to harden off.  the barring slots will be next ..in filing with Blackboard Paint..

Next will be the oil pots foe the bearing blocks...
