model engineering "stuff" on Oahu?
« on: October 17, 2012, 12:23:22 AM »
I'll be there 13-19 November.  Anyone know of any "must see" stuff that would interest a gearhead?  (The battleship Missouri is already on the list.)

Can't help you with 'gearhead' sights.
All I remember is Diamond Head and King Kamehameha.

Well I remember other things too...but not sightseeing.
The zoo, the beach, school, pineapple fields, a lot of flattened frogs, someone's entrails after a shark got done.

I was in Hawaii when I was six. 1959. Was there when it became a state.
Dad was baton major in a parade (Army band).

Oh yeah...always in flip-flops, shorts, and Hawaiian shirt. Sis and Mom in a moo-moo.
Fun time.

Last time I was there was in 1998 catching a plane ever morning at 6:00AM heading to a different island? There is plenty to see if you never been there before. Pearl Harbor is a must see. Went snorkeling off Diamond head. Went to a Luau had a great time. Visited the rain forest. Went out on the town to eat great food. Visiting the different islands was by far the best time.

The USS Arizona memorial IMHO is a must.

You could give Kludge a call  :slap: :stir:

I've been in the islands at least a half dozen times before so I've done almost all the tourist things but thanks for the suggestions anyway.

I intend to start casting about the interweb today for some ideas.  I've heard that at least a few of the sugar mills (though not necessarily on Oahu) used Corliss engines.  Mayhaps some of them have survived.  Sadly, the sugar cane train...

is on Maui and I won't be going there.

I thought of Kludge too, Bob, but I don't have enough tranquilizers to deal with him right now.  (Who would be most in need of same is left purposely ambiguous.)
