Fidgety Sidetracks
« on: July 03, 2017, 09:20:08 PM »
This is a very short project, conceived yesterday and done today. How did it come:

Usually when I'm scrounging around in the Workshop, sooner or later the two Workshop assistants appear to have a look what I'm on to. And then the next question asked is: When are we gonna do stuff on the mill?
And then there is this hype about these fidget spinners around here. So I could have gone to the next shop and get them one for a buck or two, or......you guessed it....

A quick look in the drawer with parts that might be useful one day turned up two odd sized ballbearings. And two rounds of aluminum which were barely thick enough were also found:

So the plate was faced:

The step turned:

Drilled:

And the bearing seat bored:

Chamfered:

First side done:

In order to get the second side parallel, I use parallels to chuck the part up. The parallels are then removed before turning begins and from there on it's the same as on the first side:

To cover the bearings plugs are made:

Parted off:

And cleaned up on the second side:

Done:

A washer was made to clamp the blanks on the mill:

A part holder was milled in the vise. The hole to the right is there to index the part, when it's flipped over:

By now it was lunchtime and my shop assistants came home from school.

Here we are right after lunch, all set and ready to go :

Milling, hard at work. By the way, doing stuff on the mill means actually watching what it's doing and brushing off swarf :

The first part is roughed out:

Finishing cut:

All the edges are then rounded with a radius cutter:

First side done:

The part is then flipped over, indexed in the hole with a 8mm pin and then the edges on this side ar rounded as well:

A first quick test, yes it's spinning:

Since there are two shop assistants, the whole process had to be repeated:

All the parts were then glued together using loctite. To wait until the loctite cured was the hardest part of the whole afternoon
But then, after a popsicle break it was finally achieved  :whoohoo::

It was a busy day and we had lots of fun. And I was pleased to see these spinners kept spinning till bedtime...

A great project Plani and all the more special because they were made and not bought, and because they helped out too. Not many of their friends can say that I bet :)

Very nice!  I've been thinking that too - how cool it would be to make a few of those fidget spinners.

I love those pictures! They seem to be quite happy with their days work in the shop!

Thank you all for your kind comments.

It was indeed a fun little project. The spinners were proudly taken to show around at school the very next day
So it was really worth the effort.
