Hi Rich

thats running fast how fast would it be going if you were on the track .running that first with no load in full
valve gear it would use lots of steam and the blast will be drawing the fire vary hard.i would try running much slower  and when it is turning see if it will run if you adjust the valve gear .see that you have some depth to the
bed of coals .  it might depend on how the valve events are using the steam.think of how fast it would be going on the track.

Hi John

thanks for the comments

Having sat and thought about it some more there are a couple of other things to mention. 1. When I first open the regulator there is quite a lot of hot water emitted from the chimney. 2. I have to open the regulator almost fully to get it run. 3. Adjusting the valve gear will cause it to stop. 4. it won't run very slowly at all.

I'm wondering now if the valve gear isn't set well enough.

Cheers

Rich

Possible that the water level in the boiler is too high, so not enough room for steam? I've had the on my smaller guage 1 loco, once the water level is down a bit it keeps up with steam production.

water from the cylinders   did you warm the cylinders first the drains need to be open blowing steam through
they should be hot to touch and should be open to blow water out there.

the water should come to steam the water in the chimney should come out the drains  nothing will work well until all the water is gone .was there steam coming out before starting.
On the track you would roll the engine forwards and back to turn the engine over so every thing is hot and steam
coming from the drains

Hi Guys,

The steel has been cut ready to make 22 metres of track in 2m sections.
Once covid and lockdowns have calmed down we will spend a day or two welding it all together. 2020....covid stopped play!!!!

Cheers

I would say that you are too impatient ! you have to wait for steam only is coming out from the drains, ie that the cylinders (and tubes, valves, the whole loco...) are hot enough, no condensation at all.

Hi

Thanks for the advice Zephyrin

At present the loco is stored away. We succumbed to the virus just before Christmas which really knocked us back. We have recovered now so very shortly the weather will improve and it will come back out again.

Cheers
