5"G Metro Loco

Most large scale name and number plates are etched, fine for the smaller scales, but the problem with etching is the undercut, thus the process only allows a depth of 10 thou or thereabouts, and is quiet apparent on larger scales, and does not do a fine model justice.

Using the magic CNC mill I cut the numbers and frame out of 30 thou brass with a 1mm cutter, then mounted them on a piece of 1/16” brass and filled a quarter radius on the edge, and they look the part.

HiMike,
Now those came out very nice! What programs are you using, or did you just draw in CAD? Not that I have a CNC machine, but just interested to know.

Cheers Kerrin

Kerrin

I drew the numbers 2x up in TurboCad then reduced to working size; I have a book with large size number font for reference.

I would certainly approach name and number plates the same way again as they look more like the full size plates and worth the effort.
