Chris' Build of a Lombard Hauler Engine

For any who are near Maine this summer/fall, and want to see real Lombard log haulers in action, the Maine Forest And Logging Museum is having an event on July 27th (2019) where they will be running the steam Lombard, should also be running the two gas powered ones that they have on loan. Great chance to see and ride on a vintage machine. They have sawmills, other stuff running too.

This fall is their big event, a two day fest with everything running, re-enactors, lots of fun! October 5-6th.

I made it back up the the museum in Maine for the 2019 Living History Days event - this year there were four Lombard vehicles present: two steamers and two gas powered trucks. New this year was a 1928 Lombard dump-bed truck, that was owned for years by one of the towns in Maine and used for plowing and construction projects. Quite a bit smaller that then others, but using very similar designs to the others with tracks on the back and wheels up front. With that one there, now I've had the opportunity to drive three different Lombards - quite a lot of fun!

Thanks guys. I may Have to go again next year  , talking with Terry sounds like they get another gas Lombard going, this one with a Sterling brand engine, that would make four that I have driven if so! Getting three different models out on the road together probably hasn't happened in a long time.

Its a great little museum, that event could not happen without a well organized army if volunteers. A really fun weekend! And the elves were too hung over to notice much when I got home.

1901 Phoenix log hauler

Saw this over on the homemadetools site.  Very similar to Chris' Lombard but has vertically mounted engines, similar to a Shay locomotive, mounted on each side of the boiler.  I especially like the "straddle the steering wheel" driver position.

Hi Marv,
Yes, the Pheonix haulers were made in Wisconsin under license from Lombard. They are based on the earlier version of the Lombard machine and patent, with the track rollers going all the way around the sprockets, where the later Lombards had them just down close to the ground. Also, the vertical engines each side are from the earlier Lombard design - two twin-cylinder engines rather than one twin with a differential. The steering is I think a Pheonix change, it uses a linkage more like a traction engine with a chain around a horizontal drum rather than the direct geared steering that Lombard used - much easier on the driver, though the wheel angle is a little awkward. I've never gotten out to see a Pheonix in person, would like to do that someday!
