Zombie-Duck Apocalypse
« on: September 09, 2016, 12:34:33 AM »
This evening I was sitting out on the front porch reading a book, looked up, and saw an invasion of ducks walking across the street. None flying, all walking. Just wandering around, through neighbors yard, up past me, around into back yard, back around again, would come right up and look at me. Not sure if they were muttering something about 'braaaiiiiinnnnssss' or just 'wheres the crackers'....

Couple pics below - there were at least 30 of them just wandering slowly around. Very strange. I know the ponds have been low with the drought here, but, really? No open water around here for several miles.

Ducks are cool!

Geese on the other hand.......well don't get me started. we have been invaded by Canadian geese that don't migrate; they just crap everywhere, hang around, be obnoxious and generally just make a big mess!

Oops sorry, I got started. :lolb:

From Google...

A group of ducks can be called a flock, brace, raft, team or paddling. A group of ducks is referred to as a flock while they are in flight. They are more often referred to as a raft, team or paddling while the group is on water.

Aren't they cuties  8)

Keep your grotty geese and would anyone like this pair of wood pigeon that have been hanging around before I shoot them? They like nipping off the new growth on my beetroot  >:( and of late have taken to using my garage roof as a toilet: a technique that involves sticking their tail out over the roof edge just above the garage door

Hello Jo

Why not treat your two wood pigeons to a treat of special seeds and grain.

If you get the right stuff, it will stop their dirty habits and also stop them 'dead'.

The place to try is Rentakill, they have branches everywhere.

Here you can get a sticky gel called Hotfoot,  or Wingo it gets applied to areas like Jo's garage roof to stop bird perching there. It consists of a gel made of thickened vegetable oil and cinnamon, the birds don't like the feel of the gel, and the cinnamon smell reminds them not to land there.

Pigeons. Guys,  as a refined redneck foodie;  if you are preparing them as a way overpriced fowl,  they should be referred to squab, usually served with a hearty brown gravy/sauce and enough seasoning to hide the flavor  :lolb:. Chris,  you say you guys  (notice I didn't say y'all 8)) have had a dry summer;  we've had the wettest on record  (must be the election  :lolb:) We had the invasion of Canadian geese a few years ago,  they pooped their way across the South, but,  we don't see them as much now.  Armadillos are working into the region and Tennessee had its first cougar spotting not long ago.  Guess that's how this whole big ball got to where it's at today,  we're just smart enough now to notice and record  :old:

Ya'all (or however it is mispelled) are right, I be one of them thar Northerners! Up here, on the south shore of Lake Ontario, it started out as a nice summer, enough rain for everything to grow nice, then we got into an extended period of 90+ degrees (usually only about 8 or 9 days above 90, this year heading for 30 of them) where the rain came at us out of the midwest and Canada, but kept splitting and going to norht and south of us, we are WAY low on rain this year here. Just an hour south and they are getting drowned like you guys are.

And to keep the pigeons cheap, how about beer battering them into nice bite sized nuggets? Me, I'll stick with the Haddock...

I have a problem with Pigeons here. I feed the native birds (White Wing Doves) and lately the cursed pigeons have started to take over .
Need to determine how potent and what accuracy in an air rifle is needed to eliminate the "problem". :-)

They're called "terms of venery".  This reference...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_English_terms_of_venery,_by_animal#D

indicates that, for ducks, it's "badling" or "plump"; if on water then "paddling" or "raft".

Would have.

When I saw the last post (making me realize there was a thread I hadn't seen), I went straight to the first post.
It was obvious...this was the kind of thread that would grow, sprout, and take different directions.

Always fun.

It's been more than once when I went out to the car only to get bombed by some goose flying by.
After going back into the house to clean up...I have wondered...what are the odds of it happening again?

On a totally different note...at one time I calculated the amount of droppings the world's flying birds produce in a day.
Must have been one boring day.

I wonder how much swarf this forum produces on a per day average.

Not a good question. How to measure? Poundage? Not fair...some members have an affinity for brass or steel.

Boring day? Not really. But very stressful.

My mother lived in an assisted living complex next to a pond and there was always a very large flock of Canadian geese leaving what the folks at the home called Canadian land mines everywhere. Never had much luck getting rid of them.  I always thought what they need is a good recipe!

For me it's not about getting rid of them.
It's about getting along with them.  ;D

I like them.

I do get a little concerned when I'm out doing a walk around the parking lot and discover one or two have decided to set up house.
It's not the one near the house to worry about.
It's the one off a little ways doing the watching and protecting.

Haven't gotten bit yet. But been chased.

One of the guys in the Rc boat group had a rc duck that would squirt water out its beak. One day he made the mistake of squirting the geese. One of them got mad, beat the stuffing out of his duck model, sank it, they never found it!

You really don't get along with Canadian Geese, you just deal with them.
They don't migrate anymore (at least some of them) they just hang out, make a mess, and generally just make a nuance of them selves; especially this time of year.
