Another Hodgson Radial 9
« on: November 30, 2014, 06:21:09 PM »
After reading all treads about the Hodgson-9 I could not resist to try building one to.
I have only built to engines before ,my Hoglet and the inline 6 so maybe not the best choise of build but I need challenge  ;D
I started with the cylinders but get trouble with the finning so I put them aside for a while dont want to stuff up more than one of 11.
I went ahead with the crancase instead. Bought a pice of 7075 a bit longer then needed to take a drawbar in the end, was afraid to only
hold that big chunk in 1/2" grip.
I turned all the inside and outside in that setup like I read on another builders site.
It was a bit tricky inside but all went well and I got the right dimensions.
At last I cut it off but left 2mm that I cut off with a hacksaw.
The leftover was turned to a good fit to to have on my rotarytable later.

Cheers Ove

Wow Ove, First two cylinders then six, now 9  :o. I take it you have got the hang of making cylinders  ;)

When you have done my friend Mike has the design for a very sexy 18 cylinder radial

Tonight I milled the flats and bored the cylinderholes.
Was happy to have a 27mm drill the finish bore are 28.65 mm.
Also braked off the edges of the flat edges.

Thanks Bill ,and all others!
It is a lot of cranking and counting on this crankcase. I hope a manage to put the rest of the holes in right places.
This is the only part I realy dont want to do one more. This aluchunk cost like gold :)

Spotdrilled all the cylinder holes today. I instaĺled a sino dro earier this year and had to read how to make a boltcircle and at last I get the corect start and stopangle. Thats a great thing.

Very nice work Ove

Good luck with the build - there's a lot of enjoyable machining ahead of you. I began a rotary engine in 1992 so hope you have far more resolve that I have had to date to see it through  ;)

I shall watch with interest in your progress.

Looks like 72 holes to drill and tap there Ove. I hope it all goes as smoothly as it has so far.

IIRC there were just under 140 tapped holes on my H9 crankcase. John

Looks like your off to a good start. The heads are a machining marathon. I keep telling myself "You're not in any hurry, slow down and enjoy".
