HERE'S MY LITTLE COLLECTION OF ENGINES I'VE MADE
« on: October 21, 2014, 06:42:12 AM »
Here is my first ever engine, scratch built from my own design but using Russian mk12 b cylinder liners and pistons. made everything else in my own workshop tho. This is an alternate firing in-line twin glo engine, has 1 piece con rods and a 2 piece crank. rods are 2024 t6 alloy case and heads etc are all 6061 t651 alloy, crankshaft is 4140 steel.

Very nice result for a first off Dean

What's the induction system - reed ? How do you find that if so?
Have often thought about doing the same at some stage with the Racer as the basis but never favoured using a reed.

I cant quite get my head round that form of induction on a twin cylinder if it's not a 'Boxer' layout though -  if it is a reed - how would the second cylinder create a suction as the first is descending and pumping  :-\ Does one cylinder 'lead' the other ? and have more 'drive' than the other?

All very intriguing and very interesting  - could you find the time to explain your induction systems on your multi cylinders and how they have proved running wise? Short of two separated case volumes I can't quite get my old addled brain on quite how fuel transfers with two pistons doing opposite movements in a common case.

Nice engine  :praise2: - any chance of a video of it running ?

I'm sure it's got a wall inside to separate the two crankcase volumes (or how to put it ..) that part could be hold in place by the carburettor.

Induction through the crank is possible, but difficult - the other option is to do a piston port induction like my Taplin Twin or GailinNM (a member here  :praise2: ) Lobo Pup.

Sorry 777engman - just realized I might be Hijacking your thread - not meaning to.

Hey guys thanks for the comments, the induction is really very simple, not reed valve or side port but a centre rotary valve.Basically the crank is a 2 piece affair with the centre spool being a twin ended shaft (flywheels and b.e. pins at each end) with the rotary valve made from the centre bearing portion. This is ported to give intake to each cylinder at 180 deg from each other. The centre main bearing is a split lapped bearing made from aluminium, 6061 t651 is what I use and it seems to work great. The whole bearing crank assembly is then pushed into the crankcase and locked with the venturi. bearing fit to case is a nice sliding fit but close enough to be gas tight.

Ramon the reed induction for the in-line twin engines (not mine) e.g. Oliver twin etc. is generally a side port type set-up where each cylinder works the same principle as a side port engine but it is not piston ported, rather the case is open to the inlet system and a reed is used to time the induction of the fuel mix. Cylinders are timed exactly 180 deg opposite each other and therefore function as 2 singles running on a common crank. The front shaft usually has the drive hole in it with the front big end pin being longer the normal to fit in the hole and drive the prop shaft (just like the rear rotary disc drive on your etas and ed racers) but a bit more substantial.
As for the multi's I'll upload some pics of the cranks etc. and let you see for yourself, I'll write a bit of an explanation to.

Cheers for now
Dean

Thanks Dean - I can understand what you are describing but would like to see a drawing or pics (or both) of it if possible. I have a feeling I have seen this central type of 'rotor' induction elsewhere but thought that the set up would lead to binding - obviously not  ::)
It certainly sounds like it would make an in line 'Racer' a viable proposition - hmm! - another to dd to the list  ::)

Yes please then, any further info gratefully received

;D No problem mate I'll dismantle the engine and take photos of it and send you the drawings, after I draw them LOL this engine was made from inside my head, designed as i went along kind of.

Hi Dean

I would certainly like to see how you did it too - my imaginative solution does not sound so simple as yours and I like to see improvements to my original thinking.

Best wishes

Per

Hi guys, here is the mk2 version of my first engine, basically the same design but with a bit more time spent in the accuracy and finishing spots.

As these 2 engines are the same design I will strip them down and take a couple of photos of the parts layout and crankshaft assembly.
Cheers for now
Dean

PS I will also do a couple of videos of the running.

The V4s are strange and impressive.
Do they have 4 separate crankchambers and is there a picture of parts?
Are some of the parts commercial?

Hey there, Niels, the v4's are the same working set up as the flat 4's, there is a 1 piece crank with the con rods split on the big end, both the front 2 cylinders are at tdc at the same time while the rear 2 cylinders are at bdc. the four crank big end journals are machined at 90 deg to each other. I don't have a photo of the v4 cranks handy but here is the photos of the V8 crank which is the same set up but with 8 journals not 4.
Hope this helps
Dean

That truly is awesome work Dean - both the machining and the concept. I'd love to have been there when that V 12 broke into a run - you must have been on a high for days  ;D

Love all those Vee fours too, very impressive indeed. The anodising looks superb and boy do I envy that green - I really must try to source some that shade. All I can say is that from an inspiration point of view the shoes's firmly on the other foot now mate  :praise2: :praise2:

Thanks for your email - will respond later
