Hi Ian, yes, I have carefully tried moving the offset either side of 90 degrees.

On joining the Model Engineer &MEW web site, I found a fellow stirling engine follower,  he had cooling problems on an air cooled engine, his cure was a pair of knickers soaked in water, and draped over the cold end, (think they may have been the domestic managements property).
    You could move one of the cranks 180*, to run in the opposite direction, that sometimes works.  When I'm experimenting, I use a brass screw to hold parts to the crankshaft, pullies retain the brass screw because they are often changed, depending on what is being driven.
