K N Harris Horizontal Mill Engine with Joy valve gear
« on: November 29, 2020, 07:47:36 PM »
Hi All

I am interested in finding plans for the K N Harris Horizontal Mill Engine with Joy valve gear. There are two photographs in his book Model Stationary and Marine Steam Engines  and a brief description of the model (which is now in the SMEE collection) at  https://modelengineeringwebsite.com/K_N_Harris_engine.html. I am aware of Julius's drawings of the Muncaster twin cylinder engine with Joy valve gear.

I did have a look through the ME index but could not see a likely candidate. There are a couple of articles about Joy/Greenley valve gear but not from the 40s

I think it is improbable that plans for this engine were published.

There's an article by KNH listed in the ME index for Model Engineer Volume 92 (1945) Issue 2300 that might be relevant. Perhaps someone could look it up and comment further.
Best wishes

"An Unusual Horizontal Engine". There are no drawings, but four photographs and considerable description. Mr Harris wrote, "Complete drawings were not made beforehand, as I was pressed for time ..."

Hi All and thanks for your efforts,

I had found the reference to the 1945 Model Engineer item but was unable to follow it up as it is well beyond my run of Model Engineer magazines. It is an interesting model. I have seen it displayed on the SMEE stand at the last Midland Model Engineering show. It looks as if it could be made from barstock materials without any castings.

Mr Harris wrote that no castings were used.

It does look an attractive and interesting engine.

Just dug out 2300..

Two of the fours photographs of the engine are on David Carpenter's page identified above.

There are no drawings - the details were worked out as the build progressed. It is described as a "modernised version" of an engine he remembered from the works where he served his apprenticeship which was used to drive a non-ferrous strip-rolling mill.

Scale 3/4.

Cylinder 5/8" bore, 1 1/4" stroke. Slide valve driven by Joy valve gear.

Best way forward would be to ask the SMEE if you could view the engine.
