Frazer.
I have plans for detachable flywheels. And, if you'd seen her recent drawing of Grandad, you'd realize, I'm safe, for a while. ;)

Dave.
Plans for a slot cover of some sort, are in hand.

Alan.
You set me thinking. Flywheels held on with magnets! Maybe.......

Time to make the two cranks.

This is the first time I've made anything from "mild steel"! En1a?
I have always used heat treating steel, when at work, and since retiring. En24/ 36/ 39/ aisi4140 etc. But, stocks are now getting low. I've had to buy some.
Got to admit, it's sweet cutting material.......

Drilled/ reamed 1/4" through, from either end. Part off.......

4mm dia, drill/ ream, the 6mm throw.......

Drill/ tap, the grubscrew holes........

Finished.......

Spun in the lathe chuck. One end is within 2 thou of the other.......

Crank assembly finished.......

Finger clearance, under the lever. Now need to make a knob, or dish to mount on top ........

Flywheels, next. Wooden ones!

David, its a great project and I know you want it simple enough for Mia to help with the assembly. I would be a bit concerned about the wooden flywheels though in terms of operating the engine with finger power. Generally the more mass that is in the flywheel(s), the easier it will be to keep running. Just something you may want to explore for when she wants to make it "run" after the assembly phase.

Thanks for your thoughts Bill.
I have already tried the "original", with just a single flywheelwheel. No problem!

The mass of the internal crank discs is as large as possible, for the space available.
Twin 4" x 5/8" hardwood discs should be ok....... I hope!

The reason for wooden wheels is, camouflage....... Hoping Mia doesn't recognize her engine. Also, protecting Grandma's furniture.

The discs are roughed out. First test run, later today......

Ah....I can see the logic now...especially as to protecting grandma's furniture :) Somehow I think Mia will still recognize it though

Hi David, nice project
Dont worry Mias drawing skills will soon improve :facepalm:and then you can join the club :Jester:
We are now onto a high speed Four masted/paddle wheeled boat :insane:and Im sure Iv got shares in pop pop boat engines .I need to make some press tooling as its costing me a fortune in replacement engines.
cheers

Hi Stew, thanks.
You sowed the seeds. When you made your column engine. It's a pity it took me so long.

Thanks Hugh, Bill.
I just hope she appreciates the effort.

Thanks Frazer.
That boat sounds a cracker! Replacements? Warranty claims? Oh dear!
Have you managed a reliable runner, yet?

Flywheel time!

Two blanks, chopped out of a 16mm chopping board. 1/4" hole through centre........

Mount onto 1/4" bar held in chuck. Friction turn against chuck jaws.......

Cleaned up at 4.3" o/d. That will do, for now........

Test video........

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nhFxNNzj2c0

Need now, to design some detachable hubs. For when Mia Mechanic wants to play.

This is great David :)

Just a thought, maybe you could put a pattern similar to the Wilesco M69 on the flywheels  (just don't look at it for too long  )

Thanks,

Nicolas

Good going David

Hmmm... Now who's going to play with it the most - you or Mia :LittleDevil:

Kind regards, Arnold
Building an engine takes Patience, Planning, Preparation and Machining.
Procrastination is nearly the same, but it precludes machining.
Thus, an engine will only be built once the procrastination stops and the machining begins!
