Thanks everyone for the encouragements, support and your kind comments. Believe it or not the support means a lot. Thank you!

:embarassed: Very, very nice. Now I have a little problem... self control (I never was very good at it especially when it comes to tools or castings) .... I could just.. just make a little bit .... I still have the drawings..... no one would notice .

:facepalm2: Don you are tempting me to start making my Xmas present that I am trying to forget all about so that it is a nice surprise on Christmas day

Jo

Jo, there are no virtues in goodness. Only gold stars at Sunday School.

I only got a black one and the vicar came to our house and suggested that my Sundays would be better spent elsewhere!

Best Regards
Bob

Hi Don,

Apologies for reviving an old thread.  I'm considering building this from the Hemingway Kit and had a question.  How well does the Jacobs chuck hold taps?  I always understood that taps were hardened, including the shank and didn't grip well in a Jacobs chuck which has hard jaws.  Or is it that the taps are small and there is very little torque on them.  I'd love to head your thoughts after having had the tool for a while.

Thanks,
Mark

It holds it well enough. Remember that if it holds it too tight and something goes wrong then the tap will snap.

I love tapping on my UPT

If you are worried about slipping then you could always bring the old design into the 21st century and put a small ER collet chuck on it and even go as far as using tapping collets.

But as Jo says a bit of slippage can often save a small tap which is what these things are designed for, a keyed chuck will slip more than a keyless as they tend to tighten if the item held starts to rotate.

Myself I do my drilling in the mill and follow by tapping in the mill (sometimes under power). Again probably something that was not often an option back when the UPT was designed and it was all done on the lathe with possibly a bench drill thrown in.

I have a friend with a tapping tool of his own design, with a Jacobs chuck, and he has no trouble with it.

His arrangement has the shaft horizontal - he finds the crank action less tiring that way - he does do a lot of tapping!

I suppose it depends on what you are tapping, I'd find holding up a casting weight several Kg so it could be tapped quite tiring. Also gravity will be wanting to pull the job down and out of line with the tapping tools spindle.
