Inverted Hit n Miss
« on: February 20, 2013, 09:58:41 PM »
Some of you may remember this engine.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oR8q_vDgXD0

I originally built it to run on compressed air, and while it runs really good, it's kind of boring, so I decided to convert it to run on fuel.  I've been working on it off and on for some months, and am finally getting pretty close to having it running.  I finished up the valves and got a good seal after some fiddling around.  I also ordered a CDI ignition module with coil from cncengines.com.  This will be my first venture with a hall effect instead of points so that might be interesting.  Here's some pictures of the engine as of today.

I'm still working on the design for my Bessemer but haven't actually done any work on it for awhile.

I'm eager to see it, Chuck. I've got the same CDI ignition module for my Upshur farm engine and I'm interested in seeing how it goes for you.

That looks great Chuck!   Is it going to have a finger latch type of governer lock out?

Chuck...nice looking engine. I think you will like Roy's cdi system. It worked right out of the gate for me with no experience at all. Looking forward to seeing this one run.

Hi Chuck, that is a nice looking engine and I am curious to see it run on fuel. Nice fit and finish too.

Thanks, Tim.  I talked at length with the fellow who makes and sells these modules.  I had found a problem where the coil sparks on both the make and break of contact points.  He had looked into it and discovered that the problem is caused by bounce in the points when they make contact.  So, if you are using points, you have the option of timing it to fire on the make or the break!

Yeah, I had looked for one of those for quite some time, but whenever they did come up for sale on Ebay, they wanted a ridiculous price for them so I just made my own...

Thanks, Dave.  Yes, it will have a finger latch to hold the exhaust valve open.  I'm using the same arrangement I used in the compressed air version, only it held the valve closed.

Looking forward to this  Chuck!

Thanks, Bill.  I've used one of his modules before and had good luck with it.

Thanks, Don.

I'm hoping to get the CDI module in the next day or two.  As I said before, the only major think left is mounting the Hall Sensor.  I had made a new timing gear and cam out of brass so I could mount the magnet in it.  I found out later that I could have just encased the small magnet in plastic or brass and embedded it in the cast iron pulley I had previously.  Oh, well, the brass looks nicer.

Got another runner.  Here is the first video, somewhat unpolished, but you get the idea...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNm4idhYJZA&feature=youtu.be

Now I need to do some fiddling.  I also need to build a wooden base for it, paint it, and do some other things to make it look finished and pretty!
